There had to be English teachers all over the country that cringed every time they heard him on sports news—and I loved it!
Still no word about Barco makes me think its up to the family to release any details. My guess is Sully will go with Slater, Sproat, and Neely.
I would approach it the way UGA did. Start a guy you don’t expect to be a big piece of the weekend. If you are lucky, try to win the game with your normal bullpen pieces. If you aren’t lucky, oh well. All-in and everyone is ready for Game 2 and 3. I think Slater is a big piece of Saturday/Sunday.
87— What am I missing? Why at the college level would the family have say in released information? Guess I didn’t expect to read that….
Barco is our only realistic chance to get a win. This UT team is freaking good. This weekend could be ugly. If Sully's out it's for off field issues which would explain alot.
Well with Barco out indefinitely, you have to find a new starter. So that changes my view. If Sproat is rested enough, I would go Sproat. He should be ready. He pitched on 5 days earlier this year and did ok. Then on Sunday, Nesbitt or Slater again or Manning or Hail Marys? No idea… Being down Coppola and Barco with Manning not pitching as desired, the rotation is a bit of a mess!!!
Recall how the Key Johnson injury in men's basketball was handled. Sure UF will say if someone is out indefinitely or is a no go for the next game but the actually injury is off limits for the university to say unless the athlete or family opens that up. Remember when our football Coach McElwain used to say he has a knee or he has an arm. It made him sound stupid but it was his way of not giving out too much info on the actual injury. So Barco and his family/agent will decide what they want going out to what is wrong.
My goodness, this is the worst news imaginable- I thought maybe it was an oblique or rib cage issue- miss a start- but elbow- jeez- we know what that could mean but if one thinks back Barco wasn't quite himself for several starts- I'm wondering if he was starting to favor some part of his delivery- he'd started to lose some of his lights-out control dating back three starts but gutted it out. Man- this is devastating and he's a really great kid. Wishing him all the best- hope it is not what one thinks when we hear elbow issue.
Gotta go Full Bullpen session on Friday - with hope for Sproat and Neely to be on top of game Saturday and Sunday- and if the bullpen guys can pull it off Friday- we may be in good shape. Stanger things have happened. Two innings a piece L-R-L-R or the other way round but keep Vols off balance. Fingers crossed. Go Gators
I agree with the strategy IF you assume Barco is coming back later in the year. Elbow issues, probably not coming back… You have to find a 3rd starter if you want to make the postseason. Or you tank every Friday game and hope your Sat/Sun guys get it done. I guess that is an option.
While driving back from Conundrum Ballpark tonight after Game 1 against UT, I listened as usual to the post game interview with Coach Sully. And like for three weeks now, Sully has been focusing on our pitchers need to do a better job of keeping the lead off batter off the bases. Then I had to ask myself, and I wish someone would ask Sully the same, why aren't you more concerned about getting your own leadoff batter on base if its so important to keep theirs off? Currently in SEC play Colby Halter is batting .185 and his On Base Percentage is now under .300. The only starter below his leadoff batter in both categories is Deric Fabian and he's batting last. Why is Halter still leading off when he's not much better than your worst batter? I can only hope @EthanHughes will be brave enough to throw that one out there if things don't change before this weekend is over.
Our hitters, for the most part, have no discipline at the plate and swing at way too many pitches out of the zone while taking those right down the middle. Similar to the softball team. The team is not improving as the season progresses and it doesn't bode well for the eventual outcome.
Getting word that Coppola is probably having back surgery next week. Sorry it does not sound definitive. I don't think there is any doubt though.
