Position players get the pine just like pitchers.....just ask Blake Reese. And while a guy may be struggling, he may still be the best option in the coaches opinion.
Coaches decision certainly are not infallible. Everybody gets it wrong now and then. But good coaches have a much better insight to the capabilities of their players than the average fan, they see these kids a whole lot more than we do. I like second guessing as much as the next guy....it's part of the fun of baseball. But in the larger scheme I know Sully has proven that 9 times out of 10 he's gonna be making a smarter call than I am.

Fortunately, we allow you to make a mistake but fans expect Sully to be 10 out of 10. Not fair, not realistic, but that is the perception. I have known to be this unforgiving.

My thinking was Fabian/Crisp seemed to have longer leashes than any other gator player, which no doubt created team entitlement issues. Maybe Sully sold them a longer leash to get them both on campus. They might both eventually become solid gator players, but the Gators started the season as a Top 10 ranked team, therefore we did not need to mortgage last season for future potential. The 2020 season will show how they both progress. Let’s all hope they both make positive strides, but if they happen to struggle again hopefully we will not have to sing the “wait till next year” song again. It’s the potential versus production debate. No doubt Sully will get it figured out. Go Gators!

There have been several players at UF who struggled through a particular season but still got plenty of playing time. Buddy Reed is one example as he started 51 games his FR season but hit just .244 with no HRs and only 6 RBIs. Deacon Liput had a poor SO season hitting just .227 with 3HRs but still started 68 games. There are a bunch of other examples but it comes down to two factors. First, if a kid has plus tools and a lot of potential, any good coach will give that player more chances knowing the greater upside. Second, in some cases there simply may not be a better option on the bench anyway.

Zunino as a frosh, Josh Adams had a brutal year I think as a junior. Countless examples.

Looks like Hunter Ruth may be scratched from the list as well.

I thought Calilao had a pretty long leash too, hitting .379 when SEC play began and finished at .276 (including midweek and tournament games)

As a true freshman OF playing 1st base practically full time to have a .989 fielding %, only 5 errors in 435 chances, 21 assists, and 409 PO’s I can give him a little learning curve room at the plate this year—;)

I'm a bit surprised but fully expected some pitching transfers.

Sproat added to the relief pitchers list as per article on other thread. 7th round pick said to be joining the Gators.

Super long leash and as far as no options on the bench Jordan Butler given the at bats is a great option. Except for a game or two late Calilao struggled mightily.

For those talking about Buddy and Zunino struggling I’d say the one difference (if I recall correctly) is those Gator teams were winning. When your winning it’s easy to Keep kids in the line up.
