To emphasize your point. When people learn I moved to Mexico, the first thing out of their mouths is,"But is it safe?" because in their minds Mexico is unsafe. We walk through town after dinner and concerts at night with nary a care. Have done it since 2016. Safer than downtown St Pete where we also live. People are going to stick with their baises and look for whatever reinforces them. That is what humans do. We react with our emotions and use rationality to defend them. That is how brains work. It takes effort to overcome ourselves. The VAST majority lack the understanding, fewer still, the ability.

So... Gainesville is more dangerous than Baton Rouge? Maybe we need to clean-up the eastside?

    Is Gainesville, FL Safe?
The B+ grade indicates that the rate of crime is lower than that of the average US city. Gainesville ranks in the 75th percentile for safety, meaning it is safer than 75% of cities but less safe than 25%. This analysis applies only to Gainesville's official city boundaries. See the table below for nearby cities.

The crime rate in Gainesville is 16.77 per 1,000 residents in the typical year. Gainesville Residents generally consider the northwest part of the city to be the safest. Your chance of being a victim of crime in Gainesville varies by neighborhood – ranging from 1 in 43 in the east neighborhoods to 1 in 90 in the northwest.

When looking at total crime counts (rather than per capita rates), the south parts of Gainesville, FL see the most incidents – about 840 per year. In contrast, the southeast part of the city has the fewest, with approximately 209 crimes annually.
