I've seen a couple of games this year that should be used as a training tool on how not to follow the rule change made a couple of years ago regarding contact.

One team ALWAYS gets hosed when teams are allowed to "play" because of one refs bias of what he or she will allow. Its about consistency and the creep back to the old rules that happens.

THE best course, IMO is to do what you don't want BUT to have a reserve amount of refs to choose. Call it their rendition of a bench. So after careful review, you are hereby relegated to the bench until further notice. If the refs get enough of a payout for throwing a game well then there are bigger issues at play. Otherwise they will either have to learn in earnest or they are going to be finding another profession.

The real problem is that all sports and at all levels, refs are a "necessary evil", like life insurance, and so they are used "on the cheap." If we stop going to games and the revenue stream dries up then they will HAVE to address their cheapness, which in turn diminishes the game the fans want to follow.

I just had a chance to watch the game yesterday. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything quite like the foul called on Ballard when the kid elbowed him in the face and Ballard didn't even touch him. The fact that they upheld the call after looking at the monitor was mind-boggling. I like Martin but he needs to keep his mouth shut just because a couple 50/50 calls went against Silva, especially after the screw-job we got in the Elite 8 game.

Any chance you found a recording online, or is it from your DVR?

I live in SC so got the SC-based take on things.
I saw this quote in the paper...

“I’ve got a problem when our league office puts a guy in our game that got his break in the SEC and he turned his back on the SEC to go officiate other leagues,” Martin told the assembled media. “Why are we hiring that official to officiate SEC games? That’s a problem.”

Martin added, “We got our tails kicked. Officiating had nothing to do with us getting beat. I’ve never ever spoken about officials because they’ve got a hard job. But for our league office to allow that to happen, that’s wrong. I’m sure someone is going to call me and say why’d you say that? And I’m going to tell them because it’s what I feel and I’ve told you this before, you know I’ve told you this in private because it’s not right.

This is what he got fined for.
He really wasn't complaining much about the calls but that this one ref was working our game.

I'm at a loss as to why he would bring this up post-game. Also- by making it personal against the ref he is assured that this ref will be biased against him in the future.

This doesn't make sense, on any level, but that's what the fine was for.

Once again, a Gator gets slammed in the face with an "inadvertent" elbow and NO CALL. In fact, Ballard got the foul because he hit the guy in the elbow WITH HIS FACE! We need an enforcer!

Keep in mind that rule changes require defenders to allow some for some freedom. If a ball handler turns and an defender is hit with an elbow the foul is on the defender as long as the elbow is not moved to target the defender. Problem is that some coaches are allowed to have defenders belly up and shove ball handlers with no foul called. That was eliminated to allow freedom of movement and open up the game.
