I should hope so as it is meant to be a 4th of July celebration not Bastille Day. If you want a Bastille Day celebration go to France if you want a 4th of July celebration go to the Washington Mall.

Trump apparently wants a Bastille day style celebration on the Washington Mall. This year's celebration is nothing like the 4th of July celebrations that have taken place on the Mall for decades. So you're suggesting that instead of trying to imitate the French Trump should have requested another invitation to France's Bastille Day celebration from Emmanuel Macron since he (Trump) was really impressed when he attended the celebration in 2017.

So you're suggesting there is some sort of tradition that you want to keep. To that I say hog wash. A majority of towns are celebrating today with parades and streets covered in red, white and blue. Now if you have an issue with that by all means don't go.

As for invitations one doesn't request them they are offered. Whether one accepts or not is a personal choice. Given the antics and optics here people would complain if President Trump went or they would complain that President Trump snubbed France by refusing the invitation.

Care to explain how what historical context I am missing?

By the way, try to avoid your opinion/feelings over facts.

I think most Americans love the fact they get to see our world class tanks in person.

It's not the parade that's different. There has been a parade in DC every year. I actually saw one. This is the first time that military hardware has been on display as part of the July 4th parade. It's notable that in trying to find a comparison, supporters of Trump had to go back 29 years (1991) to find a similar parade (the parade honoring soldiers who fought in the Gulf War) and cited two other examples (the inaugural parades of Kennedy and Eisenhower) that took place 58 and 66 years ago, respectively. As I previously stated the real issue isn't even the display of military hardware, it's Trump's decision to use the 4th of July celebration to promote himself. Harry Truman was the last president to speak at a July 4th ceremony on the National Mall in DC and that was to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1951.

Maybe in your life time and you want to make that a big deal? Personally I am unapologetic when it comes to our military and those that serve. They are the very reason we get to celebrate the 4th of July.

As for President Trump promoting himself you haven't even heard him speak yet and you're being judgemental. As far as any of us know at this point the Declaration of Independence and what the 4th signifies may be all he speaks about.

Maybe I will be wrong and Trump will deliver a speech similar to the one he delivered at Normandy to commemorate D-Day. The fact that Trump is holding the event at the Lincoln Memorial is a form of self-promotion. As I previously mentioned the last president to do something similar was a speech by President Truman at the Washington Monument in 1951 to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Truman's speech was also during the Korean War and less than six years after the end of World War II. It would have been nice if Trump decided to commemorate Independence Day like President George W. Bush did in 2008 when he hosted a naturalization ceremony in which 70 people from 30 countries became US citizens or as Barack Obama did in 2010 when he hosted a barbecue for 1,200 service members of the South Lawn of the White House.

I call BS. Construction started on the Lincoln Memorial in 1914 and wasn't completed until 1922. It is a national monument which means it belongs to us all. Perhaps you want want him standing in front of Greek Columns?

Beware the military-industrial complex. This was the last 5 star General’s parting advice after 8 years as President. He was also perhaps the last great Republican President.

Agree. I wasn’t on board at first but the more I think the more logical it becomes
