Nelly did ok. :D Too bad he is a Cub!!!

Third-ranked Cubs prospect Brennen Davis supplied the first hit for South Bend in Game 2, a one-out double to left field off right-hander Kevin Malisheski in the opening frame that moved Andy Weber -- who walked -- to third base. Weber came home on cleanup hitter Nelson Maldonado's single and the Cubs led for good four batters into the game.

Davis contributed again in the second by singling home a run against southpaw Justin Bruihl. Maldonado produced two more runs with a double in the fourth, leadoff man Clayton Daniel delivered a two-run knock in the fifth and Maldonado capped his four-RBI night with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Cubs secure spot in Midwest Finals

Per ESPN this morning, Alonso has now reached base safely in 34 straight games. Another Mets record.

The rookie record for HRs is 52 by Judge. Pete might rewrite the record book, but only getting to 50 HRs is also amazing. Very few have done so, especially cleanly.

And I am officially a jinx as Pete did not reach base tonight unless I can’t read the box score...

    I am sorry Pete!!

Gators produce players who marry models and beauty queens!

Gators also produce players with character and values!!!

His first thought was to get custom baseball caps with a 9/11 theme, but Major League Baseball blocked the idea with a mile of red tape, so Pete Alonso came up with another plan.

The Mets first baseman would buy each of his teammates custom-made cleats with different designs honoring the 9/11 first responders, and to heck with approval from MLB.

So the Mets took the field Wednesday night at Citi Field wearing their 9/11 shoes to honor the victims, families and first responders. The result was a 9-0 Mets win over the Diamondbacks on 11 hits. And if you think the baseball gods weren’t applauding Alonso for his efforts, then maybe you should look again at the final boxscore.

A couple Pete articles on ESPN today:

Maybe the most impressive thing about Alonso's season: He has seen the lowest percentages of pitches in the strike zone of any hitter in the majors, just ahead of Josh Bell and Christian Yelich. He quickly earned the respect of his opponents.

As wild-card race heats up, you gotta believe ... in Pete Alonso

This next one you have to pay for (I didn’t):

The defensive work that Pete Alonso did would determine the course of his career, as was explained to him when he was in the minor leagues. There was high regard for his hit tool out of college, and his power and drive for improvement, but he was seen as just about unplayable at first base.

Olney: Facing questions about his glove, Mets' Alonso 'made himself a first baseman'

    Let this sink in.

Lou Gehrig went to a well regarded university (Columbia), played for a NY team, played first base, and never hit 50 or more home runs in a season.

Pete still has a chance to do the last thing.

In 151 games Pete has hit 48 homeruns which is a homerun every 3.14 games. There are 11 games remaining so, IF he maintains his full season pace he would hit 3 or 4 more to finish with 51 or 52.

Obviously, this 'analysis' is VERY imprecise but it seems there is a good chance he gets to 50.

Darren’s been on that long hard road from injury through recovery and getting back to play—all the best to him.

And Pete, what can you say that hasn’t already been said— just WOW, and Go Pete!
