2002-2003 Gator Joe Mercadante was named UNF bsb head coach at UNF on June 23. He played two years at a couple of JCs before joining the Gators. He only started one game for the Gators at DH and hit .312 in 37 career at bats, often as a PH. He is a Gainesville guy who graduated from PK Yonge in '99. He got a Masters from UF and coached at UCF, Miami, Stetson and Pitt before joining UNF. His younger brother came up through Gvl Babe Ruth teams playing against my kid, but Joe often was around and I liked seeing him get into games in his limited Gator career. He was a sharp recruiter in his assistant jobs and I hope he does well at UNF. He'll make regular trips to his hometown for games now and I hope his spankings are gentle.
