Just noticed on FB a post from the UF Turfgrass Science Department with a few pics of the work being done.

During the 2 years ('75-'77) I was enrolled in the Ornamental Horticulture program, my counselor was Dr. Dudek from the Turfgrass Science Department. He was a super nice professor - someone I'll never forget from that era.

I ended up using a lot of the turfgrass knowledge at one point in my career and will always be grateful for that part of the program.

University of Florida - Turfgrass Science is at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Actually looking into the master plan, seems like a proper "stadium renovation" isn't even really on the timeline yet. For some reason I thought there were already specific plans being bantered about, but I guess not for a few more years.

Which is why the word "Stadium" was not included in my post.

Also, this work is much more than a "re-sod/restoration" of the playing field.

That is why we (as in we in the industry) use the term "renovation".

I could be wrong but the last time it was done was about 7 years ago.

Yeah, seems like a missed opportunity from the UAA. They could have sold off plugs or squares to fans for a few bucks apiece. Who wouldn't like a piece of Florida Field in their yard.

FSU may want to stockpile it, since they won't get a chance to take any for awhile.

They should excavate about 2 or 3 feet of the dirt to lower the field level even more to enhance the noise level within the stadium.. I believe I read a good while back that the original field level is 3-4 feet below sea level..

They clearly should have had a redneck monster truck pull before it's completed. Wasted opportunity.

Gainesville itself is 177' above sea level (I just looked this up), so that claim is impossible to believe unless the original field was at the bottom of devil's millhopper. ;)

Hahaha, not something that probably pops into mind for many. I didn't even know that was a thing.

I doubt any dirt they remove goes to a landfill though, there's surely a better use for it than that - my guess is it would probably just be used as fill dirt for construction elsewhere (maybe?). Although I guess pesticide contaminants (as well as the spreading of ashes) could be an issue for that type of use.
