PROVO, Utah — Florida jumped to a 1-0 lead BYU in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament regional semifinal Friday, but couldn’t keep the fourth-seeded Cougars from rallying in the 3-1 loss.

“Hat’s off to BYU,” said Florida coach Mary Wise, who has more Division I wins than any female coach in NCAA history. “That’s a very good team that played well tonight after the first set. You can see why they are where they are, with their offense and defense.”

Holly Carlton led the UF offense on Friday night, posting 16 kills during the match. Paige Hammons added 11 of her own, while Mia Sokolowski pitched in eight. Allie Monserez dished out a team-best 21 assists – her 31st time leading the Gators in that category this season.

Allie Gregory led the backcourt defense for Florida, posting 13 digs on the night. That was her 30th time leading the team in digs this season. Marlie Monserez recorded her second double-double of the season, registering 11 assists and 10 digs.

Florida Falls to BYU in Regional Semifinals

Gators finish season with a 26-7 record after earning the program’s 25th trip to the Regional Semifinal

Game Recap: Volleyball | Friday, December 7, 2018 | Katie Callahan UF

As a squad, the Gators notched 8.0 blocks, led by a team-best four by Holly Carlton.

    How It Happened

    • Florida got out to the early 5-0 lead in set 1 behind the serves of Paige Hammons and continued to hold the advantage throughout the middle of the frame. BYU tied it all up at 15-15, but Florida went on a 6-2 run to gain back the advantage. The Cougars battled to cut the deficit to one at 24-23, but Mia Sokolowski closed out the frame with a bullet down the line.
      • The Gators hit .216 in the frame, holding the Cougars to a .070 hit clip. Paige Hammons led the way with four kills, followed by three from Holly Carlton.
    • BYU took the advantage early in the second set, going up 12-7. The Gators were never able to get back in it, falling behind 23-11. A kill from Mia Sokolowski and a block from both Lauren Dooley and Holly Carlton kept the Gators alive, but BYU closed out the set on a Florida attack error.
    • Once again, BYU got out to the early lead in the third set, but Florida went on a 4-0 run to pull with two at 12-10. The Cougars then went on a run of their own, pulling ahead 20-13. The Gators cut the deficit to six at 23-17, but BYU closed it out to take the 2-1 lead in the match.
