Down by 22 with 5 seconds left, your opponent is running out the clock, and you go for the steal? I'm fine with the on court stuff that happened afterwards. Heads turned too hot after that, in my opinion.

[EDIT: to clarify @hoopnscoopuf , I'm talking about the Kansas players getting back to play defense including both the steal and the block attempt, but nothing that went on beyond that...which I'd consider off-court, non-basketball action]

Its unclear but I'm not even sure he voluntarily dropped it. Almost looked like someone grabs hold of it before he lets go.

Either way, I agree. Should be done for the year. He won't be though. I'd bet 8 games or so.

While we're on the topic of that player though, he shouldn't even be playing for Kansas. He received impermissible benefits that were provided so that he would attend Kansas. The NCAA made him sit a year for this and then let him play for the school that he was enticed to attend? Makes no sense. Have him sit out and then force him to transfer so that the team who, effectively, cheated to get him doesn't end up getting to benefit from his play in the future. Bet Kansas wishes he hadn't been cleared now.

Really low class move by KState at the end there but something Kansas players have to be able to rise above. KState player just made himself and the team look worse and Kansas players could have left it at that and looked better in comparison. The way some of them responded, obviously, completely changes the narrative though (not saying you disagree).

Talking with some Kansas fans in the office today and they say he won't play for them again. He was the source of some of their NCAA problems, so he will probably be gone.

Interesting. Have been wondering what Kansas fans thought of this. I don't really trust message boards to reflect this.

If this punk move (see the chair!) doesn’t get you parked for a big stretch, virtually nothing will.

There it is. That's an image that ultimately costs Bill Self his job. It may or may not happen this year, but that picture will be linked to KU forever - alumni and administration are no doubt aware of the reality of that.

The kid's a garbage time player for them (8 min and 2.6 PPG ). He's hardly worth the trouble. My guess is he will be dismissed from the program. If he was a 15 PPG player it would be a very different story.

That would be "more" unsportsmanlike, true, but you still don't steal the ball away from the guy dribbling out the clock in a 20+ point blow out. It doesn't deserve getting hit with a chair, but it's still a jerk move and it's the event that triggered it all.

Take out everything else that happened after the steal, and KU / KSU boards are talking all day today about that jerk move of stealing the ball and dunking as time ran out.

Thankfully, basketball doesn't have 1000 unwritten rules like baseball does, but stealing the ball in the final seconds while the other team is dribbling out the clock is definitely one. Still, like you said, at that point just point to the scoreboard and let it go. De Sousa is nothing but a knucklehead.

The NCAA has reviewed KU's video, ticket sales, jersey sales, and other revenue streams created by KU to the NCAA and has determined that KU has been punished enough with the bad publicity.

Listened to a podcast recently that touched on this concept. They contend that the actual purpose of the NCAA is to uphold an illusion of integrity and compliance all while keeping the money flowing.

Really good documentary by SBNation called "Foul Play" held this same belief.

The NCAA does a lousy job of what they purport to do but a much better one when it comes to their real purpose.

Holding the chair like he was ready to swing it was a bad look for De Sousa, but in my mind stomping or kicking at a guy on the ground is even worse.

Stealing the ball with 5 seconds left in a blowout might be a jerk move, but volleyball spiking his layup then standing over him is what really instigated and escalated everything. Then to throw a punch after he was pushed, then grab a chair - clearly he went absolutely thug life on him. In a basketball game for god sake. That's an entirely different level of jerk (and straight thuggery) than just stealing the ball

Who would have thought there would be so much anger in a place like Kansas.

    What would Dorothy think...
