There is a lot to be said about getting high character kids from good families. IMO, mixing it up a bit with some kids that have had to fight for attention, affection and food would translate to more on the field urgency. Maybe just an extra intangible to go with brains and physicality.

I get what you're saying. May not be the easiest thing for you to word for us to understand but i understand completely what you're referring to. I just think overall the mentality of the team starts and ends with the mentality of the HS. Maybe it happens in practice cause we don't see it, but on game days, I do wish win(ning) or lose(ing) CBN should some urgency/fire

I had to click on the title to see what parents would name their kid Feral Hunger. I remember my dad telling me stories of growing up in a house of 9 people and if you were late to the dinner table there usually wouldn't be anything left. Now that would be Feral Hunger. Once had a Pastor named Ferrell Fisher for what it's worth.

I was the skinniest kid, as the 8th. It's brutal.

While I sit on my fat arse, guzzling cheap beer with my frat brothers from years ago, and stuffing my face with hot wings from hooters, I would love to see a bunch of poor kids scratch and scrape on the field for a crust of bread so I can bragg about the gators winning a championship. Totally entertaining. What a great idea.

Hungry athletes just want a chance to maximize their talent. I agree that hunger and drive can rub off and feed other more laid back types. Many of the kids who are our all time gator faves were hungry. Many have altered their life path for the good that becomes generational. It’s more than scraps that is available.
Spare me the virtue signaling please.

    Lol.
Nice try but if you read the op there are all kinds of problems with the proposition.
Another example of how offensive is the post is the contrast made between the well fed kids being high character…..as if being poor is immoral. And then calling some poor kid feral? Like he is a damned wild animal?
So if my objection to the op is virtue signalling, so be it.
I am surprised the mods left the thread up.
    I think it patently offensive.
And spare me the maximize their talent justifications. You can maximize talent of poor kids without this kind of denigration. And the op is about winning games and didnt even mention maximizing the talent of poor kids as the goal. Just using their poverty as a means to winning.

When you come from nothing, you’re ‘hungry’, and if your success can ‘feed’ your poor family, there is a lot of motivation to make it happen. A lot of poor kids also have survival skills that kids from means don’t have because the hardness of life rubs off. There are a lot of factors here that translate to high competition and winning on the field.
Grit is a good thing and a lot of these kids have it in spades.

I don’t see anything wrong with the op’s sentiment.

You have experience with this? You were born into and grew up in this kind of environment, or you work in the children and family services/social services or community health field? Or is this all based on assumptions you have?

No matter how you look at the somewhat turgid nuances of the OP and the resulting discussion, Feral Hunger would absolutely be an awesome name for an angst-ridden Irish rock band.
