I'm sure others will add info. Good luck, Gators, on your exhibition games. Beat JU and GA Southern!
Pretty quiet board for fall workouts, so I'll toss out some impressions. I claim no special expertise beyond being an active a baseball lover, but I've attended about 3/4 of the scrimmages and I hope to liven up the conversation. I generally left out frosh and some others because I didn't have anything useful to say. FWIW my comments: Peterson is our ace. He'll face some very tough SEC lineups that will determine how happy I feel next May. I haven't seen King pitch, but I anticipate growth and development since last season. My guess for the weekend starters is Pete, King and possibly Cooper Walls, a big soph RHP transfer from Hawaii. I've seen him on at least three outings, each a bit better than the one before. Last Thurs, he had two good innings that convinced me he may be the Sunday guy. McNeillie may fill that role, he's definitely third best pitcher on the team, but I imagine him as a consistent closer. Barberi has looked good and might be a top reliever and midweek starter. McDonald also has pitched well. The remaining pitchers, most of them newcomers, seem promising, but no one has caught my untrained eye. Jenkins mixed good and bad outings last season, but I hoped for mostly good this year. Sadly, he has been pretty badly pounded all fall. Another promising returner, Rodriguez, has given up some hits, but looked good at times, too. Yost is having a strong fall. He is listed at the same weight as last season, but he seems noticibly bigger. He's on my list of likely starters. Surowiek will be in the lineup, too. He started the fall strongly and has continued. Here are my guesses for the position starters. There are few players that are limited to only one position- the three catchers, probaby Kuland. That mix of skills gives Sully great flexibility to move guys around and play the strongest offensive team with no harm to the defense. It also muddles anyone's attempt to guess a lineup. Still, my guesses: C- I can't name a leader among the trio. 1B- My guess is Lawson, but Stripling, McDonald and Soruwiek all have worked at 1B in the fall. I see Lawson and Soruwiek as the strongest hitters of the four and one will play 1B, one 3B. Strip can play 3B, too, he and McDonald can play OF if needed. 2B- Kurland. Several guys have worked out there, I see Nadeau as backup SS- I lean toward Mills because of experience, but Myers seems to have improved his body and his skills since last spring and could steal the position if his bat gets hot. He also can play 2B or 3B. 3B- Soruwiek. Lawson and Myers worked here and Strip did last spring. Including frosh, there may be 10 guys who could play 3B and 1B. OF- Bastien's leg will determine our leadoff batter, because he was going to start. I'll make my guesses without him, but I hope he recovers by spring. Cyr, Jones, Yost, L to R. Yost, Bastien and Jones are fast and are good hitters, too. Being able to start three CFs is good for your defense. Cyr is my guess for next up, but Wilson, Nadeau, Brookins and others could end up playing a lot of innings. DH- This will be the hottest hitter who isn't on the field. My last comment is an anecdote from 10/14. It was a DP, which most people picture as started by an infield grounder or a line drive, but they can be very odd, too. This one started with Lugo-Canchola on the mound, one out, Wilson on second, Myers on first. (I can't remember the infielders or batter. Ask GatorGal.) The play began with Lugo-Canchola picking Wilson off 2B. The 2B returned the ball to the P who turned his attention back to the batter. Myers then broke for second, but Lugo-Canchola caught on fast enough and threw back to 2B to get Myers. DP scored 1-4-1-4, Wilson picked off, Meyers caught stealing. That's easy enough to write here, but how do you fit it into those little boxes in a scorebook? In a game, an ump likely would have called time, but scrimmages typically have a gaggle of pitchers, injured players and managers lollygaqgging around each base to make pretend umpire calls that never include time out. A full team of umpires is great for a game people have to pay to see, but the purest of baseball games is played with one ump or none. Since I'm on a roll, I'll mention how proud I am to have legitimately used the word lollygagging in a sentence, better yet, a baseball sentence. I don't feel any special pride in mentioning a gaggle of lollygaggers.
Tuesday October 28 Gator Baseball Scrimmage Gatorgal is on her trip across the pond. So, as her semi adequate helper, I will plan to give a summary for scrimmages. Sunday scrimmage was changed from 11:45 am to 7:15 pm only to being rained out. In one scrimmage that I did not attend transfer Jr. Jaden Bastian broke his leg running to first base. Hard not to feel like he knows something. Or at the very least views the situation as unstable and was looking for a way out.
Bastian injured Sully issues Chuck leaving for Tenn yeah boy baseball is in a great place . What a week !!
Well enough of the bad news I guess. We still have a team that appears fairly salty on paper. I would love it if anyone is in Jax at the game and can give updates.
Official attendance for the Halloween/JU scrimmage was only 760. Though, at $20 + Ticketmaster fees & starting too early for folks driving from Gainesville, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It would be nice to get two Condron scrimmages next year.
I don't see Jax putting much money towards this in the future unless something changes. The videos from there looked bleak.
Started as a gimmick game between Gators and dawgs to bring in FB fans. Then dawgs dropped out a cupla years ago. The Jax stadium constructiom is a convenient opportunity to have both scrimmages in Gvl. I wouldn't mind a home/home series against someone within a reasonable drive every few years at a convenient time, not as a FB side show. I'd have considered driving up for a scrimmage at JU, away from the circus. I like showing off the nice baseball program to potential fans, but primary bsb draw is within 25-50 miles or less.
Partridge is not playing in the O&B series, but he had a solid fall for a frosh. His shortcoming is that he a prototype skinny frosh with two mor more older players ahead of him at every IF position. If he hits the cover off the ball in preseason workouts, he could win a position, but more likely he'll redshirt unless injuries are even worse than last year. Myers certainly has benefitted from a year in the weight room and managed nutrition and Partridge likely would fill out well. Plus a lot of the current infield depth will be gone a year from now and Partridge will have a size/experience advantage over 2026 frosh.
Remember rosters have to be reduced to 34 players by December 1 so a half dozen or so players that competed in the fall won’t be with the program when the spring semester starts in January.
