If Billy continues to recruit like this, keep them in the fold, and slowly builds up the on field talent fsu and Miami Will be left in the heap pile of history. Yes fsu is a the “hot team” but norvel is on borrowed time. He can’t recruit solid high school talent and has gotten by with the transfer portal plus the I. State rivals being down. That will change.
If he can continue to fill the gaps in his HS recruiting from the port-a-let, then he should be fine. If a year happens where his portal efforts are not up to snuff things could go South, though.
yea i don't buy the since he's not a great HS recruiting, he's going to fail. They have to keep hitting in the portal and they'll be fine
Coach Norvell should (must) be applauded for turning things around at FSU, no matter how he accomplished it. (transfer portal or whatever). 10-3, but FSU suffered through: FSU UF 2017 - 7-6 4-7 2018 - 5-7 10-3 2019 - 6-7 11-2 2020 - 3-6 8-4 2021 - 5-7 6-7 2022 - 10-3 6-7 I think it's clear Norvell is doing a good job and turned things around. As has been mentioned, it seems he is doing it via the Transfer Portal. Many posters suggest that to "build" into a power, ala Clemson, OSU, UGA, BAMA etc. the transfer Portal is not enough without grea H.S. recruiting. It is also FAIR to point out the respective strengths of schedule and the conference one is in. IMO UF has a clear advantage in that area. FSU is doing well in the Transfer Portal UF is doing well in H.S. recruiting. We shall see where the "value is" in the next couple of years.
For better or worse, Florida doesn't have nearly the patience that FSU does. No chance in heck we would've ridden out 4 losing seasons in a row with ANY coach.
10-3 isn’t some great feat with their schedule. They got beat three times and we almost beat them. We were absolutely terrible. They aren’t that good.
They were also very, very close to losing to LSU and Louisville. Travis's legs will lead them to another solid year, but I'm not sure how they'll do once he leaves
I didn't say they were great and I never will. I would love to see the slimy holes play UF's schedule next season. But Norvell did win 10 games. They are back in the conversation, at least among ACC teams. I'm just pointing out records since 2017 and how both teams are going about rebuilding.
Good point. And before I throw stones at FSU, I'd say there is a pretty decent chance Billy has a consecutive losing season (and our team 3rd)...given our schedule and lack of an obvious high caliber QB.
I gotta see more than 1 winning season before I can say there is a upward trend, especially in the conference they play in. We play in the conference that has won the last 4 national championships in a row and 6 out of the last 8. And Clemson who won the other 2 nattys still owns that division and they have been considered to be somewhat "down" (if you believe that) from previous years. Now if Norvell can string together a couple more impressive seasons against quality opponents then I'll be receptive to him turning FSU around. He may very well do it because their schedule doesn't look like it's getting a whole lot tougher. (Meanwhile we added 2 more national powerhouse program to our conference lol)
I'm not an apologist for FSU. I dislike them extremely. But 10-3 is 10-3. I hope they go 0 - 12 personally this season.
All 10-3's are not created equal. We conceivably could've gone 10-3 with their schedule. Ole Bobby was smart avoiding the SEC all those years ago. I think FSU will be a bit better this year and, because they don't play anyone, will be in the playoff conversation early and often. If they were in the SEC, they just be another "very good team"...that loses 4-5 games.
