Friend of mine ran into Stokes at their team hotel in Columbia, MO and said Stokes told him he's good to go by the end of January.

I doubt we see either of them until sometime in February, assuming Stokes doesn't get redshirted. If either guy was fit to compete in a practice session, word would have gotten out already.

He looks really big and not like a basketball player. But so did Charles Barkley and he could really play.

According to the friend, he's massive. Very big man. Probably needs to go on a diet.

Needs to hit the, um, pool and do water aerobics until he faints. It is the only way to sweat, get strong, and not stress out a knee.

Which sport is worse for your knees: football or basketball?

That is a great workout. My wife used to swim laps and I would walk them as fast as I could. It is harder than most people think.

with his big w-i-d-e beefy body...he could wreck havoc on opposing players employing a butt-dozer technique when boxing out. wreck havoc on opposing players knees!

I would think they should red-shirt Stokes. If Egbunu is coming back, I am not sure of any reason they would play Stokes.

I fully agree Art. Unless he amazingly fast for his weight (circa 280 lbs?), he likely needs to drop 25-30 lbs to be able to play Coach Whites high speed offense and defense.

I think his weight wouldn't be an issue this year since we'd only give him a few minutes here and there anyway. You can be 300+ pounds and still run up and down the court for a few minutes. I'd worry about him picking up on things such as defensive assignments (knowledgeable person here said he was the worst defender on his team) way before weight.

Can Johnson still redshirt? Seems like a lost year for him too

I think you are unrealistically minimizing that potential problem (his weight and general shape), although I agree that he will have a very tough time with his assignments, also. At his extremely high weight, plus the lack of conditioning caused by not being able to work on conditioning very efficiently, given the knee injury, even when fresh, he would have a hard time keeping up speed wise getting back in time to defend against even normal transition, not to mention, fast breaks. After a minute or two, it would be even worse.

I just think that with his conditioning and lack of work in the system, he will not be able to give us much this year, which would be a wasted year.

The reason why I mention it not being a problem for him is because he's much more agile than your typical 300 pound kid offensive lineman. And he's not just sitting on his butt this entire time, the S&C program applies to him as well. He's been practicing for quite some time. I don't think he's ready this year, but maybe he could surprise us.

I think you are right about his size not really being the main obstacle. He is someone who has no experience coming off an injury. Unless we know he will come in and really contribute, I don't think there is any reason to send him out there this year. He can continue to practice and get better. He will still need to get in better shape. Playing 100% will certainly help that.

With all that weight Stokes is carrying it's no wonder he has knee problems. Losing weight will be good for his career in many ways
