    I was flipping through channels when I saw highlights of Norm Sloan coaching NC State's first NC in Basketball. Of course Norm became the gators coach later on. But, the story of Jimmy's battles with cancer and his 1983 NC team was phenomenal I thought. I was touched, laughed and cried watching it.

    Jimmy V is a polarizing figure in basketball. His battle with cancer, his crusade and foundation to benefit others- made him a hero, however.
    My family and I knew him well. We sat with his wife and kids when Jimmy was at Iona. I was too young to have any real depth to my opinion of him, but my dad really liked him a lot.

    He was sleazy and a cheater. That ESPN and Vitale have lionized this guy is a scandal. Chris Washburn is example A, but not the only one.

    Ooof! Tough crowd! Survive and Advance is the best 30 for 30 I've ever seen. Seen it more than once and cry like a baby every time. If you can watch that and not get choked up you are quite the automaton.

    I try to separate Valvano as a human being... as man who worked tirelessly during his final days to benefit cancer research.... from a coach who cheated in the game of basketball.

    Some things transcend basketball and sports. Not to get religious, but I believe God chose Valvano for a reason. Either way, I think things got sleazy at NC State after the title in 83. He got canned and never coached again. No sense belaboring that situation.

    It's a good one but IMO the 2 best 30 for 30 are The 2 Escobars and Once Brothers

    Once Brothers is incredible.

    I really liked:
    * Celtics/Lakers
    * The best there never was
    * Muhammad and Larry
    * without bias
    * fantastic lies

    I didn't realize there are people out there that don't like Jimmy. I knew about some of his coaching misconducts, but I didn't think it was so egregious for people not to forgive and forget. I know its not an excuse to misbehave, but I mean, most coaches cheat to gain advantage. Anyway, it's not the reason why I posted it. I just thought it was a good segment regarding NCAA BB and it was interesting to find out what went on behind the scenes during NC State's championship season. It also brought back memories of Houston's phy slamma jama team. How amazing and talented that team was. Too bad they didn't win the NC. It was also refreshing to see players stay for 4 years in college back then.

    The biggest issue I have with him is/was...he is Italian. This "paisano" ilk in college basketball circles, while entertaining, is aggravating.

    And sometimes you are better suited to be a minor league coach (see Cal) than a college coach.

    Yep, I forgive all his misdeeds. I know he clearly wasn’t a saint while a coach. And is extremely frustrating to compete against someone like that. But having watched people go through the hell that is cancer, anyone who struggles through that is forgiven in my book. Cancer sucks.

    A lot of passion for basketball and perhaps a better broadcaster than coach. There was a lot of cheating that went in back in the day. You could not win if you played an entirely clean recruiting game. Everyone stretched the boundaries and some programs still do. I played basketball with Phil Weber. He played at NC State and was an Asst Coach for UF. Those guys have great stories you will never here

    Your blanket statement about Italians. Substitute "black" or "Jewish" for Italian in your post and see how it comes across.

    It wasn't about "those people" but how the Italian connection in college basketball sort or looks out for each other. There is quite a bit of "forgiveness" going on...as well as some back stabbing.
