Diaz’s aim: Make UM cool again
Head coach faces recruiting challenge to win South FloridaBy Christy Cabrera Chirinos South Florida Sun Sentinel
CORAL GABLES — Last January, the Hurricanes looked poised to become a force. A year later and with another National Signing Day looming on the horizon, everything has seemingly changed in Coral Gables.

The Hurricanes are just weeks removed from a disappointing 7-6 season in which they couldn’t defend their ACC Coastal Division championship. Their offense, beleaguered by quarterback questions and inconsistent play at several positions, was one of the nation’s worst, averaging 5.6 yards per play, ranked 75th among FBS programs.

Little of that will appeal to most highly recruited prospects who are looking to play for a championship-caliber program with stability. As of Thursday afternoon, Diaz had not announced the hiring of any offensive coaches.

“[Miami] hasn’t done anything but finish 7-6. So, obviously, everything has to start anew. The kids that are signed up wanted to come here, no matter what. Now they have to start getting those kids who are choosing between other schools,” said Larry Blustein, who has covered South Florida recruiting for more than five decades. “You have to give them a reason to get here. Finishing 7-6 and in the middle to the bottom half of the ACC is not going to do it.”

What sort of recruiter could the Hurricanes’ Blake Baker be? Let’s look at his history
On Friday, Miami announced the hiring of Blake Baker as defensive coordinator, prying the assistant coach away from his job as defensive coordinator and safeties coach of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

Diaz opted to keep the rest of the staff intact, which means most of the coaches’ recruiting abilities are known at this point. Defensive line coach Jess Simpson, linebackers coach Jonathan Patke, cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph and safeties coach Ephraim Banda all spent time recruiting for the Hurricanes’ Class of 2018.

Baker, however, has never had a job as a position coach or coordinator with a Power 5 Conference school, so he’s never spent time hunting for four- and five-star prospects. He does, however, give Miami another set of relationships to lean on in Texas, which hasn’t been much of a recruiting destination for the Hurricanes in recent years.

    This is all good news.
Scum has to recruit Miami to be successful. They’re trying to bring in some kids from Nevada and hired a DC that will try to recruit Texas.

80s and 90s. There was definitely an angle they could play. Like being the most "hood". Or the "South Beach (Shapiro/Uncle Luke)" angle of the endless party. Or even the edginess of Miami at the time and a sort-of "Raiders of College Football" angle. All of which made UM the favorite team of the unaffiliated fan.

But unfortunately for UM, that's all in the past. Everybody has tough guys now, so UM offers nothing new and they're so lacking in facilities that they really don't compare to the bigger programs in that respect. The turnover chain harkens to the past, but really is just a prop.

To me they just sell wolf tickets now, trading on that past in a pathetic attempt to rekindle it. But that's not happening, because those days are long past now. Miami is more soft than edgy now, nobody knows who Uncle Luke is and there are a ton of other options that can better prepare players for the NFL. The chain was cute, but UM is going to need much more than gimmicks to get back to the glory days.

It was cool when they had the TO chain and that is recent. Was the problem talent or coaching? He kept most of his staff in tact so if coaching is an issue making the school cool is not going to work.

Stay home anc get $2000 athletic stipend or go to Bama, Auburn, TN, TAM and get a $6500 stipend per year. $18,000 difference in spending money over 4 years. If you had no money, which stipend would you choose? The NCAA basically encouraged kids to leave South Florida and screwed the U here. Howard, Jimmy, Dennis and Butch did not have to deal with this drastic difference in athletic stipend Not sure why more people don’t discuss this

How is this the NCAA's fault? Honest question.

Wouldn’t they want to hire Jim McElwain if they wanted to be cool?

LOL. The U's facilities are Top-25 now. The Nevada recruits were Top-100. The campus is beautiful with new dorms under construction and South Beach is still HOT. Dan Mullen is a very good coach and UGa vs UF will be a great rivalry for the SEC East every year. However, underestimate Diaz and The U at your own peril. There will be a large contingent of U fans in Orlando on 8/31.
