Performative politics for the base. Lip service to having local decisions made locally.

    Meanwhile…

I won’t be surprised if Florida Virtual School sees an uptick in enrollment and women are still less likely to return to Florida’s workforce.

The most powerful company in the state (Disney) and one of his largest donors (Publix) essentially told him to eff off this week by re-implementing their own mandates.

It's unfortunate that American politics works this way, but when you lose the corporations, you start to lose the battle.

I'm not a proponent of shut downs and I am not a fan of mask mandates only because they aren't worn properly and effectively. This order is far from common sense though. My co-worker worked his secondary ambulance transport job last night. He is as anti Biden as it gets but is vaccinated despite having his own suspicions about the weaponization and politicization of the virus. He said the ERs are jam packed and covid is back with a vengeance.

Its ok to break from party politics and still use actual "common sense"

Wow. It’s astonishing that a professed conservative would unilaterally declare that local schools districts shall not be allowed to make their own decisions. He would have screamed federal interference in state’s rights had Biden mandated masks. The only difference between DeSantis taking the decision away from local school districts and a mandate to the states by Biden is the former has no factual bases and is purely political, while the latter would be based upon science.

I'm waiting with bated breath for you to wow us with your logical explanation for how this is common sense.

Conservatives are no longer small government - at all. They barely even hide it anymore. They just want more of their people in government and to kill any progressive or liberal agenda. That is the entire platform of the republican party as of 2021. Just beat the liberals. There is no other coherent agenda.

I guess attacking public health experts and epidemiologists is an “agenda”? Like that doctor in St. Louis who was heckled by looney protestors at a city council meeting. You can basically be assured that whole thing was organized by someone with an (R) by their name.

Another brilliant DeSantis special. How many teachers will bail before the school year?

I think anyone would follow a mask mandate if it was proven masks work. Show me the RCT showing masks work and I’ll say DeSantis is pandering to his base. But since I know there isn’t a study showing that I’m very happy that parents can make the choice themselves. The teachers all have had the chance to get vaccinated.

IF masks worked, why did cases drop after lifting the mask mandate?

Who to believe? Virologists and epidemiologists or a random ACR?

You can't run an ethical RCT of mask wearing. An RCT takes a group of people and randomly assigns them to conditions in which one group is treated and the other isn't. So to study mask wearing with an RCT, you would randomly assign people and tell one group that they had to wear masks and another group that they can't wear a mask. The problem is that mask wearing is widely recognized by researchers as an effective prevention technique against spreading infections. As such, you need to take a group of people that would have worn masks at some percentage probability and tell them that they can't wear a mask. No human research board would allow that as you are purposefully harming the control group compared to their condition in the world prior to the RCT.

In the absence of the ability to do RCTs, the next best method is to use observational data with some sort of causal statistical method to test the effect of the behavior.
