    NATIONAL SIGNING DAY

DeLand safety Williams: Hurricanes were ‘best for me’

    By Chris Hays Sentinel Sports
DELAND — Avantae Williams surprised observers during every step of his recruitment.
National Signing Day was no different.
The DeLand safety was widely expected to sign with the Florida Gators, but he made a late switch and announced his decision to sign with the Miami Hurricanes during a ceremony at his school Wednesday. “Just the relationships and with my heart, that’s where I wanna be at,” Williams said when asked why he chose Miami. “That’s what I felt was best for me.“

Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed recently joined the Miami in a chief-of-staff role within coach Manny Diaz’s program, but Williams said the appeal of learning from one of the greatest safeties in the history of the game didn’t sway him. “That’s cool. … It’s not why I made my decision, but that’s great,” Williams said. “It’s the guys who have been there. I’m going there because of the relationship I have with the staff.“

Williams had deep ties to both schools.
He first heard in March 2016 that the Florida Gators might be interested in his services. The DeLand Middle School eighth-grader couldn’t believe it.
He didn’t think it was real. He didn’t know what to do.

He's gonna feel betrayed when that staff is gone in a year.

He’ll end up a Gator or stick.

That staff has one year to prove it...

I sense this in the kids future -

The question will be did he burn his bridges with UF with the stunt he pulled by lying to the coaching staff.

I'm gonna assume his child played a major role in his decision. Good luck to the kid, except when they play us

I'm sure there are exceptions, but it seems like the more Signing Day drama, the less impact they have once they are on campus.

Whenever you make a decision based on a relationship on staff it can bite you on the keister. There’s no guarantee they will be around. Best of luck to him.

As I said, there are exceptions.
But Bryce Brown, Marquese Jones, Nukeese Richardson are 3 I can think of with major drama, and they didn't do anything in college.
I don't remember what Dante Fowler did. I'm not talking about a ceremony or an announcement.
I'm talking about a troll job.

Like the FSU kid a few years ago who acted like he was coming here, to take up one of our spots. Then signed w/ FSU and trolled us.
Don't remember his name but I think he didn't do anything either.

I prefer recruits who make a decision, commit, sign, comes to campus and works hard. (Or change his mind early- like Wingo. That's cool.)
Good kids from good families who want to be a part of the team- not get a bunch of glory on signing day.

Those kids turn out a lot better, on average, than the Bryce Browns of the world.

    IMHO of course.

If I'm going to buy this, I'll need a much more systematic approach than "here are some dudes I remember."

Can’t fault a kid for going with his heart. But if it was the relationships that made the difference he is going to be very disappointed when they all get fired in about 11 months. Kid is at least a year of training away from getting on the field so he will make a nice portal grab for some school.

The Young man made a decision that like it or not is in fact His decision!!

Don't take shots at kids, it makes you look childish and like a Miami Hurricane fan. Fact is in the ACC a few good recruits can net you wins in that joke of a conference...

He played games and it showed with the coaches reaction...

Best of luck to him and his family. He's got 3 kids to father.

If it comes around that he needs to leave Miami, so be it.

I'm proud of the kids who signed with UF!!

    Go Gators
