It'd be a huge move if this were allowed. Can't imagine it'd be good. Supreme Court blocks creation of first religious charter school in US
Dang, I was looking forward to trying to get the first chartered Satanist elementary school off the ground
Since the Justices were locked at 4-4, they did not issue an opinion and or who voted which way. It leaves in the place the SCOTUS of Oklahoma's ruling. Only applies to Oklahoma.
I don't think subject decision lays the issue to rest. It's only matter of time before a full court hears the issue again in a case from another state and based on Amy Coney Barrett's history the chances are next time SOCTUS will issue a 5-4 decision upholding the right of states to fund religious charter schools the establishment clause of the First Amendment be damned.
Point well taken. The idea of a Satanist charter school funded by the state is probably absurd, but an Islamist one isn’t. And I don’t want that. I also know quite a bit about how the Chinese Communist Party uses influence operations in the U.S. via so-called Confucian institutes. That’s all we need is for the CCP to figure out how to get us to pay for them with our own tax dollars. No, the answer is simple. Public education needs to be secular. I believe in religious education, but people need to pay for it themselves.
