Auburn DL Daquan Newkirk has announced he is transferring from Auburn to the Florida Gators. Here is a portion of the GC report by Spivey. Auburn defensive tackle Daquan Newkirk (6-3, 317, Orlando, FL.) announced he’s transferring to Florida on Thursday morning. “It’s a honor to be coming home, thank you Coach [Dan] Mullen, Coach [David] Turner, Coach [Todd] Grantham, Coach [Wesley] McGriff,” Newkirk tweeted. “Let’s get to work.” Newkirk played in 10 games this year accounting for 28 tackles, 8 sacks and 3 quarterback hurries, in his career he has played in 30 games for the Tigers. The defensive tackle will be a grad transfer after starting for Auburn this past year, Newkirk has battled injuries in his career but this season was healthy for the Tigers.
Believe you have that sack total wrong (it was 1.5, which is also his career total at AU), but glad to have him on board.
I love it. Keeps Zach at SDE. allows the young DTs time to develop, drop bad weight.... etc. Is this it as far a DLINE additions thru the portal?
Seems like with the 22 signees and three transfers including Newkirk, we only have room for two more on NSD (at most). Wonder who they'll be? Arnold, Wallace? Any chance that Hammond or Strickland are still even possibilities? Will make for a pretty quiet NSD this year, regardless.
I wanted 2 DT in the portal, and we got them, so everything else in the portal and Arnold is gravy on top to me.
This is recruiting now. Do you think we were the only school asking all these Portal guys to come to our school? You hit on many more proven 1 year college guys than you do on talented 3-5 year high school guys. Need an immediate fix? Portal is the answer. We have seen the proof of that since Mullen has been actively recruiting the Portal. If you do not take advantage of transfers, they will be an advantage for someone else.
The good news is that at DT it is nice to get a 23 year old grown man that has SEC experience playing in the trenches than trying to plug in an 18 year old freshman.
I love the portal. It removes the risk of improperly evaluating high school kids -- you can pick up players that have proven to perform at the collegiate level. If you are relying on it, you're in trouble but I think it is a great way to plug few holes that were caused by missing a few recruits out of HS. I'd like to see our HS recruiting get a better but I can live with 2-3 portal players per year. There is no denying we came up short in recruiting at DT and OT over the past few cycles. We either hit the portal or sign a few "Adrien's". Yeah ... welcome Daquan.
So, how many years does he have? 2 years it looks like unless one of the 3 years stats were provided for ended up a RS. That extra year is a big bonus on transfers this year. Edit. He is listed as a senior for 2020 on the Auburn site so I guess only 1 year.
one year stop gap and i guess this does mean that although he hasn’t announced yet, that Slaton is gone which in all honesty, he needs to come back for one more year
