Is Dan Mullen the best coach in America with the transfer portal?

New Florida Gator transfer Arik Gilbert is a 6-foot-5, 249-pound wide receiver in a tight end’s body. Runs a 4.7 40 and has a 35-inch vertical. Gilbert brings many of the same elements to Gainesville that made Kyle Pitts such a force in Dan Mullen’s system. Few coaches are better at creating one-on-one matchups for their playmakers than Mullen. He’ll have yet another difficult-to-defend piece in Gilbert, who'll create many of the same down-to-down stresses Pitts did for opposing coordinators.

Pull the lens out, and this move is just as much about Mullen’s transfer strategy as it is adding Pitts 2.0. The transfer portal has transformed the college football offseason, and nobody has been more aggressive adding high-end talent through that avenue than Mullen. The last 18 months have seen Florida add FIVE former five-star recruits through the transfer portal.

For a little perspective, only five teams in the FBS had more than a quintet of former five-star prospects on their roster last year: Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and LSU. As it happens, those teams account for 13 of the 14 national championship participants of the College Football Playoff era ...

Florida's 2021 offensive attack will be fueled by flashy transfer portal binge

Is it possible Dan doesn't recruit the 5 stars as hard as some other programs do, knowing he can find what he wants in the portal? Every year he has added key contributors, huge difference makers. Actually 2020 was a bit of a down year in the amount we depended on transfers: Cox showed some flashes of brilliance, but we got nothing out of Lingard. Grimes and Shorter delivered but we got huge production out of old time Gators Trask, Toney and Pitts.

As a whole, Florida has landed 15 players from the transfer portal under Mullen. Four of the ten to transfer before the 2020 season started in their first game in a Gators uniform and filled a need immediately. Realistically, four transfers in the class of 2021 - Gilbert, Bowman, Shelton, and kicker Jace Christmann - could do the same next season.

Are Transfers Balancing Out the Florida Gators Recruiting Struggles?

And these kids have already spent at least one season in a college conditioning program.

A 5 star at OT and DT would put the over/under at 10 - 11 wins. Keep it going Dan!

    Yes, he is.

This is part of the recruiting landscape now. The recruiting services, publications and other measurement means have not caught up with it.

Yea they’ll have it corrected in the next season or two. They’ll figure out how to re rank classes subtracting transfers leaving and adding incoming ones. If for no other reason than to improve the business model. People pay for their info

Did someone really say we got nothing out of Grimes this year?

Sure. He is the best coach in America with the transfer portal.

What does that actually translate to and does it really mean much of anything? Does he get a banner for it?

Maybe he is doing a good job in the portal because he does so poorly in recruiting kids out of high school. We have slots open so rules of saturation seem to imply they will fill the slots. Places like Bama, UGA and Clemson don't pick through the transfer portal for a reason.

    It's a good argument.
I'm just glad we are gaining more than losing through the portal.

You heard Arnold about wanting to go to the best team. They all do. Then they are hit in the face with reality. There are 3 five stars ahead of me, too far from home, this gumbo sucks or whatever. PT is available now at an awesome school.
The HS(and IMG)kids will start to appreciate it. Hopefully soon.

You might be referring to my post which stated that we got production from Grimes and Shorter but that that we got more from Gator recruits Trask, Toney and Pitts. In prior seasons you might argue that a Greenard contributed more significantly than Grimes did this year. That was my point, not to say Grimes produced nothing which we be completely false!
Oh and that we got nothing out of Lingard this past year, hoping that changes for next season!

That make more sense, Grimes and Van Jefferson did really well for us.
I think Cox will do better this year.
Lingard needs time to learn the system

Yes then they can re-rank UGA based on what they really retained. I've never seen so much talent leave a program. Kirby will be known as the coach who has done so little with so much.

If you recruit well, the portal is just added sprinkles on that sundae

If you recruit poorly, the portal is that bag of ice that tries to keep your ice cream from melting.

    Or not. YMMV
