Season ticket holder since 1988 and student in 1980. So I have seen the highs and the lows of Gator football over the last 40 years, including the downfall of Doug Dickey (4th & Dumb) and 0-10-1 in 1980 etc We just need to let the season play out. Perhaps one of the greatest Gator teams ever started out 0-1-1 in 1984 before winning 9 straight games. Obviously, those were different times and different scheduling issues. I am not a fan of BN. He may be the worst game day coach that I ever recall at UF. His end game and end of half game management is at best perplexing. Perhaps he is a very good CEO. He seems to be an excellent recruiter and the players continue to play hard. They did not give up last year and there is no indication that they have given up yet. Certainly, the loss to a decent USF team at home has everyone on the “Fire his ass” bandwagon. It was coaching malpractice, but the players contributed to the disaster. The reality is that we have no viable options to lead the team if he is fired. So we just need to let the season play out. There is not one team on the remaining schedule that we can’t beat, or lose to for that matter.
I just don’t think he’s a very good offensive coordinator. I’m perplexed as to how he doesn’t see it. He’s almost good enough but ultimately just … well not good enough. I’m the same vintage as you almost.
The powers that be have literally had 14 and a half months to hire a new full time president and have failed at that. Why blame Sun Belt Billy and Stricklin for incompetence when their superiors are just as equally incompetent. Education and intelligence are not the same thing.
The team is divided now. Napier is losing the lockerroom and is obviously favoring Lagway. And now Lagway is basically on his own on the sidelines just looking like he’s not interested. Trey Wilson looks disinterested. The offense is playing with a reflection of Napier, the playcaller. Napier knew he had to show that the end of last season was the beginning of something special and really can’t afford stagnant offenses. He couldn’t get out of his own way. The defense is a national champion caliber defense. They play their asses off and the offense returns the favor by turning over the ball or stalled drives. No changes need to be made there because you have to have this kind of defense to win ballgames constantly in the SEC. There’s no reason for Napier to stay and continue with the same exact performances. I’d rather see an interim coach, Roberts or Gonzalez, take over because at least we will have something to look forward to. Just a little boost to the offense will ignite them. Would any of you be thrilled playing in Napier’s offense?

Well, I started following the Gators during the “super sophs” years of John Reeves and Carlos Alvarez in 1969, so I've seen a few games and a few coaches. We've had a few clunkers at head coach, and Napier is in the same group as Zook and Muschamp. I do think that one thing has to be considered is the portal will open for 30 days if he's let go, and I'm quite sure nobody wants half the team leaving in the middle of the season. Probably will have to wait until the end of the season.
In answer to your last question, it’s about the only one I could play in as a 73 year old with a bumb knee who never played competitive football. It is so vanilla that even this caveman could play in it with no better success than his players are having.
We have already let 3+ Seasons play out with the same unacceptable results...Why let a 4th one play out as well?...Other schools are making statements now by firing their HC for unacceptable performances (V-Tech, UCLA)...We are The University of Florida...We need to make a statement that we expect Wins and Championships not dismal, blundering leadership and embarrassing losses...We can work the rest of the year on naming a new HC...For now, we need to take a stand and let everyone know this is NOT who we are.
Agree with your post, but the jury is still out on the defense. We haven't played anyone with a powerful offense yet. We shut down Miami to 27 points (forget 20 points; Kelly was merciful), and I would be inclined to agree.
I too have seen a lot of Gator football. This is $hit. We as a fanbase are too in love with and nostalgic for the “boys of ol Florida.” Those days are gone. Players get paid and have agents/handlers. Coaches demand huge buyouts so performance cannot be a cause for firing. ADs and coaches intertwine their fates together with even crazier contracts. Everyone is looking out for themselves. Time we start doing the same.
I don't entirely agree with you, but you offer a mature, well thought out perspective that many of our more entitled posters lack. The thing about 1984 was that although we started slowly, tensions swirled around Gainesville until the coaches changed. The 1984 Gators was so laden with talent, it is unfair to compare them to today's team. It was arguably the most talented team we ever had.
