Don't think we have a hitting coach, but if do have it I bet it would be Langworthy. At least he can teach them the strike zone and how to work a count.
I don’t root for people being fired, but this feels like Sully finally realizing some changes are needed. Maybe this frees us up to have a hitting coach, or some other specialist that can iron out all the little things we just don’t do well and haven’t for a long time. Base running, situational hitting, throwing strikes etc.
Anyone with the inside scoop? 15 years with Sully, but perhaps no longer has passion or energy for recruiting? Older and can’t relate to kids? Concern regarding hitting approach, particularly with RISP? Needs better advance scouting on tendencies of opposing players in terms of video and analytics? I thought the relief pitching was a real weakness all year, in addition to our inability to hit in pressure situations with runners on base or make contact (too many strikeouts). I had not heard anything, so curious if anyone has some inside scoop or heard chemistry issues. Recruiting classes have continued to be highly ranked the past few years
Surprising to me but, maybe this will allow us to get a younger coach who can do the things mentioned above by oragator1 and help with recruiting. Sad to see him go but, if it helps the team, great.
I’ve heard some high school kids don’t like some of the Gator coaches. In Orlando and Gainesville areas. But what do I know. I guess we will find out with recruiting.
Sully sticks with the guys he's loyal to a bit too long. But- someone had to fall on his sword --- the day after another late inning meltdown - so why not Bell. When Gators failed to reach Supers in 2019- Sully dumped Weitzel. I think a re-boot of entire coaching staff may not be a bad idea as with the Gators excellent facilities and the best University in state and Region- we can do a lot better. Several SEC teams made Supers- it's embarrassing to not be getting ready to play Virginia Tech. Questions need to be asked about how we are trending as a program.
The article does say he was the offensive coach. I may have heard a complaint or two from fans here about the offense...and that Sully is too loyal. Not sure why folks wouldn't see this as a good thing. I know I don't know enough to have an opinion. Just reflecting what I read.
This just weeks after Mic retires? Mmmm. Just kidding. I bet one coach felt we should have pulled Slater sooner, pitched Sproat, bunted with runners in first and second with no outs, and played our defense in with a runner on third and one out and the other is named Sully.
I won't miss Bell and his coaching at 3rd I believe that letting Brad Weitzel go had a negative impact on team cohesiveness, base running and infield play
