It can only be used in hospitals, but the problem is that almost every state is saying that they are running out as soon as their latest allocation from the federal government arrives. Back in late May and June, most than 20% of cases were being treated with it. I know for a fact it is standard procedure here in Central North Carolina for people severe enough to be admitted to the hospital. I know that from my uncle who is down in S Carolina that it is the standard treatment as well......but, the hospitals are critically low to out almost all of the time since the post Memorial Day surge in stupid behavior leading to hospitalizations.

Between this one and the Pfizer/BioTech vaccine candidates, BARDA has committed ~ $3 Billion. These two vaccine candidates attempt to attack all (Moderna) or some (Pfizer) of the spiked protein, we better hope that this is the correct approach or the government just flushed $3B. And the argument has been all along that its use needs to be started earlier in the course of disease. Not waiting until people are too sick for it to help. Think of telling the guy that just had the MI stop eating triple cheeseburgers every day. It wont help his heart attack because its too late.
I looked at the FDA website for active clinical trials. If I have read the information correctly (and there is definitely some question about my level of understanding, but....) there are at least 3 randomized, blind trials targeting patients earlier in the disease cycle and or more mild cases of Covid-19 for treatment with Hydroxychloroquine. From what my pod-cast nerds have said, it is likely not a question of if there is a benefit, it is how much and at one point in the infection. Very similar to what you said above. So, it does not seem like people have totally abandoned studeis/research into this drug.
Good news out of Johnson & Johnson pre clinical study. J&J has already moved to Phase1/2 trials with humans testing for safety and has accelerated its timeline to Phase 3 large scale trial to September. This vaccine candidate is different from the Moderna and Pfizer candidate. In short, it is possible (not proven, but possible) that previous encounters with other Coronaviruses may help modulate the human response to SARS-CoV-2. I think if there was an oral treatment that could reduce the likelihood of hospitalization and serious longer term effects, that would go a long, long way towards getting us back closer to normal. Eli Lilly setting up Mobile Research labs to perform/collect data on 2400 long term care facility patients treated with their antibody LY-CoV555 in the hopes that the antibody treatments will prevent these patients from developing infection if exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. After other countries have been using this technology for months now, the FDA is finally off its politically influenced arses and getting serious about wide scale, rapid testing that is "good enough".
