Tough news out of Gainesville on Tuesday as the Gators have lost a defender for the season.

During his Tuesday morning media availability, Dan Mullen revealed redshirt defensive back CJ McWilliams will miss the upcoming season.

“He is going to be out for the year with a torn Achilles. He ruptured his Achilles, so he’s going to be out for the year. That’s a tough one,” Mullen said. “Non-contact injury. That’s a shame… It was early in practice, planted and drove and felt the pop, it’s a shame

Sucks for him. He's been through a lot on the field and I was looking forward to see how he improved this year.

Gonna be on those freshmen even more to get up to game speed.

Depth is getting scary in the secondary. Best wishes for his recovery.

At least its official. Now we just need something (more) official on Huggins and Stewart. And wardrick. And humphries.

McWilliams was burned several times as a freshman, but so was Anthone “Antoast” Lott. He later developed into an All SEC-caliber player.

I wish him a “full” recovery. It won’t be speedy, because Achilles injuries never are. I just hope he can come back at 100%. With this type of injury, that is possible but unfortunately not a given.

Yeah, secondary depth is a concern. Didn't we lose another kid to an achilles tear? They are no joke.

UF is suddenly screwed in the secondary. Huggins issues, Stewart's status rumored to be up in the air, McWilliams out, Edwards and Steele transferred, UF is left with Henderson, Wilson, and three freshmen at corner. That is kind of a disaster. A few injuries and UF will be starting two true freshman at corner and will be playing safeties at corner for depth.

Wasn’t this a rumor a few days ago that we were admonished to not talk about because it might not be true?

How many rumors about injuries are mentioned here that end up not being true?

I would like to know where that poster heard that news. He was ahead of the game for sure.

Bad news for the Gators and McWilliams who had worked hard to get up to 185 pounds of good weight. Wishing the young man a complete recovery and hope he stays close to the team during his rehabilitation.

Sorry to hear this - especially for CJ.

This is what we looked like at depth at the start of the year:

    CB Henderson/McWilliams/Elam/Edwards
    SS Taylor/Stiner/Lenton/Whittemore
    FS Stewart/Davis/Huggins
    CB Wilson/Steele/Hill/Kimbrough

Chris Steele should be kicking himself for transferring. He would have seen some serious playing time this season. Not sure if that will be true for him at USCw.

Yeah, sometimes kids make decisions in the moment without thinking about the future.
If STeele had stayed, he might have felt better about UF once he hit the field and understood Gator nation.

Not the first kid to make a mistake, and not the last.

Dean is our 3rd corner. Of course we need someone else at STAR then but we'll be ok without further attrition.

This is a defense that typically runs 5 DBs, and will do so against most teams this year.

    CB Henderson/McWilliams/Elam/Edwards
SS Taylor/Stiner/Lenton/Whittemore - moved to WR I thought...
    FS Stewart/Davis/Huggins
    CB Wilson/Steele/Hill/Kimbrough

That being said, there are only 11 DBs left on the roster for those 5 spots, and that counts Stewart and Huggins who many not be available immediately when the season starts.

There is no one left cross-trained to play STAR other than Dean, so if he has to play corner, then a freshman will have to step in with almost no experience. I think it is much more likely that Dean stays at star and the true freshmen just stay at corner, and a faster safety gets some double training at Star or they move Burney back there and then start Houston or Miller at the other LB spot.

Ahab - key here being - "Without further Attrition" - Crap the UF secondary is starting to look like the UF basketball low post last year.

As stated, getting thin, too thin, I'm starting to worry. Wish that kid from LSU that is rumored to be transferring was eligible THIS year.

Oh well, honestly if UF is able to get through Fall practice without anymore of these type injuries they will be fortunate. Seems every pre-season we have 1 or 2 that are derailed by serious injury.

Hopefully CJ recovers and can hit the field next year!
