How many of these guys were called upon to bunt in HS? Probably very few at the most. I saw Kendrick in HS. He was 3 hole hitter and was asked to hit balls into the gaps. I saw Lang in HS. Same thing. I saw Jud in HS. Led off but same thing. I saw Brady Smith. Same as the others. It is a skill and if you have not done it your whole life it is hard to master at the SEC level. No single pitch is straight. Yes we should have it more but it is not as easy as just go out and bunt. When I was HS hitting coach we used a lacrosse stick to "catch" the ball. Helped the guys see what they were doing.

Also, if you are not good at bunting.....well Just ask Max Scherzer!!!! LOL

Agreed, a major weakness of our team/program. Our pitching should be much improved next year. One extra run with a good pitching is huge. The sac bunt is the big one but both JY and Jud should bunt and not be scared to do it. With their speed 10-12 bunt hits a piece should be the goal. Softened up the corners too. Anybody that has ever played third will tell you a good hunter really takes away a third baseman’s range.

And they all want to play at the MLB level. Unless you are Teddy Freaking Ballgame you might have to bunt at the MLB level.

It is a fundamental skill. You have to learn it.

How many high school pitchers need to throw anything other than a two seam fastball? If you had a good one you could skate through HS ball.

Yeah but if the just threw a 2 seam us pitching coaches wouldn’t be able to screw them up with other stuff

Just talking about kids with really live arms here.

Teach then a change up/palm ball. It doesn't screw up their elbow or mechanics and it is an off speed pitch. You can be almost impossible to hit if you have command of the easiest two versions of the fast ball (two seam and four seam) and a good change up. I have to admit that command of the two seamer is not easy if you have a good one. It can move a lot. Command of the four seamer is easier, but it is easier to hit if you expect a fast ball.

Maybe teach them a cutter as it blends itself into a slider when they get to a point where they really need to pitch at a higher level. I always thought that a good slider was a cutter thrown a bit slower with a bit more rotation and it was essential to be "over" the pitch so that it broke down and not sideways.

Curve balls should be the last pitch you learn if I was in charge, but kids want to throw it before they are ready. It has always been that way. It is hard on your arm/shoulder and is hard to locate. But it is so much fun to fool a batter with a good one. It is like a drug.

Yeah I was an over the top guy so I didn’t get the run I needed with it. I was 4 seam here I come with a 12-6 that would grind you down . So the slider was nothing more than a frisbee.
When I coached pitchers it was FB and change. Today’s kids get their private coaches and they think they are all power FB and slider guys. Not many 12-6 because the arm slots are more mechanically correlated wth 3/4 slots.
Also never had a kid to reach 86 so I worked on making him a pitcher by using hitter advantage counts to his favor. Calling pitches I usually could outwit most 17-18 year older Hs hitters

I was a three pitch guy. Fastball, change up, and knuckleball. I probably had an even number of K and HBP on that last pitch LOL

I screwed around with the knuckleball. Never in my repertoire as my mechanics for throwing it were way different from my other pitches so the batter would know it was coming. But not know where it was going. LOL.
