Stock market is up on news that China and US have agree to roll back their tariffs.

Good news, but kind makes you wonder what the last two years was all about? The tariffs were supposed to be the leverage that forces China into making a great one-sided deal for the US. Trump starts a trade war only to agree to go back to the way things were? Sounds like a loss, to me.

China says it has agreed with the US to cancel existing trade tariffs in phases

Truth not withstanding, Trump will claim a great victory.

Seems like a de-escalation more than anything.

I think it's a concession on the part of Trump that nobody wins a trade war. Even assuming that the tariffs inflicted more pain on the Chinese economy than on the US economy Xi doesn't have to run for reelection, Trump does.

Good. It was failed policy. Market seemed to not really take it seriously, other then a few hiccups when things seemed to be escalating rhetoric wise. A real hard-lines trade war probably takes 10,000+ off the Dow and who knows what off GDP. Fortunately it never got that far, but I’m sure people directly impacted will argue it DID go that far for them, the pain just didn’t spill into broader markets.

What?? No way Trump would cave in - trade wars are easy peasy. Are you going to tell me next that people are sawing their way through the best border wall?!

Ya don't suppose that the market movements were intentional so he and his pals could make mad stacks of cash by intentionally manipulainting markets. Not that I've ever seen that before. An by "not that I've ever seen that before" I mean I've seen RE folks do it over and over and over and over and over...for decades.

And I'm just one guy in one market. Right Schultz?

If we get the Chinese to respect us patents it's a big win for the USA. I hate Trump and wish he would keep his stupid mouth shut but his goals in this trade dispute with China weren't bad.

You had to know the fight with China wouldn’t go well when Trump started mini trade wars (or threatening them) with our allies in Canada and Europe (as well as Mexico). If Trump was serious about going after China, he would have tried to get all hands on deck among our allies first. Instead, he actually went after them first. That was telling to me.

At last check, Trump is *STILL* threatening the German automakers with massive tariffs. So maybe he is softening on China so he can go after his true enemies, western democracies.

Great. Except for the fact that China found other markets for US ag products and US producers are going to have a tough time breaking back in. Dropping tariffs won't bring back those markets but it does make Chinese manufactured goods cheaper again and the US will continue to buy again. In short, this isn't a peace treaty, it's Trump surrendering in a trade war he lost.

The pig flu in Asia is so fortuitous that I almost think it was biological warfare on our part. I think as horrible as Trump behaves and how scatterbrained he is he just might win this battle.

If it was biological warfare, which I doubt, it would be even more blatantly criminal than the extortion scheme. Send him to The Hague.
