Harry Fodder: Cheez in 'The Bubble' (and Brooklyn spotlight)
Chris Harry / uf Senior Writer
Former UF standout point guard Chris Chiozza, now a starter with the New Jersey Nets, talked about life in the NBA "Bubble" and the restart to the 2020-21 season and a Zoom call Wednesday from his swank Disney hotel.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The NBA tips off its reboot Thursday night from the so-called "bubble" in Orlando, with the league getting (so far) rave reviews for its run-up to the restart and unique handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are seven University of Florida alums scattered across the Disney properties (eight, counting a certain former head coach), including Brooklyn Nets point guard Chris Chiozza, who answered our Zoom call (video below) Tuesday and shed some light on NBA quarantine life from the comforts of his luxury hotel room at the Grand Floridian Hotel.

The Nets currently are resting in the No. 7-seed spot and appear a lock to reach the playoffs following the eight-game wrap to the regular season. Brooklyn, of course, has been without marquee 2019 free-agent signees Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving the entire season, and now is minus center DeAndre Jordan (COVID) and point guard Spencer Dinwiddie (opt out). The latter means Chiozza will be on the floor when the Nets (30-34) tip-off Friday at 2:30 p.m. against the Orlando Magic (30-35), who trail Brooklyn by a half-game in the Eastern Conference standings.

When we last saw "Cheez,: he was carding two points, seven assists, four steals and three rebounds over 23 minutes in a 104-102 road victory over LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers back on March 11. The NBA announced its shutdown that night.

Chiozza playing much better today. Didn’t start but midway through the 4th period, he has 14 points (6 of 8 from field) with 6 assists.

He needs to get off that two way contract. Brooklyn is hosing him now with the amount he is playing.
Hopefully he gets rewarded after the season. I have always thought he would be a great career back up, he’s smart and efficient, good teammate. Perfect rainy day guy to have around.

He was +19 yesterday. He played well. He is a guy that needs minutes, and if he gets them he will be a quality PG in the league for a while.

Dang, Cheez led the team in minutes, off the bench. Starting PG was -6. Cheez had a 10-to-2 assist gap over that guy despite similar minutes. Alas, 2-of-9 on 3s.

Its on ESPN....on a web browser if you go to the box score it should be the second to last stat.

If you are on mobile, you will have to click the little box that says "show all stats" and it will show it as the second to last stat.

14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and a +/- of +24 for Cheese off the bench yesterday in the Nets win over the Kings. Cheese is no Kasey Hill or Andrew Nembhard, but it looks like he is going to be a solid NBA point guard.

Yes another great game from him. Wonder if he'll be able to find a spot in the rotation when KD and Kyrie are back...
