saw it again the other day. still, imo, the best movie ever made, just cannot get excited about a dying man talking about his childhood sled. Casablanca has it all, star powere, romance, intrieg, classic lines, etc. how do the rest of you feel?

It's definitely better than Citizen Kane, to which you allude. I've seen Citizen Kane more than once and still don't understand how a couple can legally give their little boy to a bank.

    The GOAT, IMO.

Fun Casablanca-ish story: because of the movie, I stop at the r wheel Everytime I'm in a casino (few times/year) and plop down a min bet on B22. Never hit.

One trip, late at night, my buddy got felted at the poker table after bleeding cash all weekend.

Dejected, we were were headed back to room when he said he had roughly $127 left and it was obvious he wanted to part with it.

Clearly, I had just the way to do that. We shoved our way past all the cigarette smoking oxygen tank wheelchair people that crowded the only wheel we saw. They'd been there for hours and had small/or single chip stacks spread across the field. We annoyed them as the dealer got him chips and it was hilarious as he just plopped the tower of chips on B22.

    Guess what. Yup.

After we screamed and laughed, it took the dealer and the floor some time to pay out, further pissing off the roulette folks. We apologised and went out for breakfast. On the winner.

Great movie, has one of the best movie scenes of all time.

The Nazis are in the club singing their supremacist songs, and Lazlo goes over to the band and tells them to play La Marseilles. Then they drown out the Nazis singing.
    Beautiful.
Immediately after that incident is the scene.
Renault comes to Rick, and tells him he has to shut down the club for gambling illegally, and then Rick hands him his winnings.
    LOL

My all time favorite. I got the 75th Anniversary Blu-Ray for my birthday, featuring a restored and remastered version in 1080p. I never saw the film in such detail, where you could see the textures of the fabrics and other details on the screen. Ingrid Bergman in HD is amazing.

While one of the greatest Hollywood movies of all times, Casablanca is a fortuitous accident, a confluence of people and events. This was a movie written and made by committee, a typical studio production of the time. They had no idea what they had. The original script, based on an unsuccessful off-Broadway play, Everybody Comes to Ricks, arrived at Warner Brothers by mail the day after Pearl Harbor. Unbelievable timing. The studio wanted the movie to turn Bogart, a tough-guy character actor, into a leading man, but it transcended that. Even the invasion of North Africa, which happened right before the release, put the real Casablanca on the map just in time for the movie's premier.

Fun fact: The movie featured actors from all over Europe who fled the Nazis, including Conrad Veidt, who played Colonel Strasser, a famous German actor who fled to America because his wife was Jewish. Many of credited actors were well known in their home countries and were eking out a living in Hollywood in exile during the war. Only three US-born actors received credits in the movie. One, who played the Bulgarian girl willing to sleep with Rick for the letters of transit, was Jack Warner's stepdaughter. And finally, the letters of transit were a McGuffin, a plot device, entirely fictional. There were no such thing as letters of transit.

Casablanca is a great film, but not as good as Citizen Kane. Welles pure manipulation of lighting and sound is a masterwork alone, phenomenal directing and story. Citizen Kane is in a class by itself.

I’ve mentioned it in the past, but this is the best single scene ever put to film.
The entire movie oath is set in a scene without almost no dialogue, just by showing the various characters reactions. And what people forget today, is that it was filmed during the war, with many of the actors European refugees. The emotions in that scene were 100 percent real, they didn’t know if they would ever go home. The drowning out of the Germans, and the comedy to end it...all against the backdrop of the rousing anthem.
    Just perfect cinema.

As for citizen Kaine. It’s innovations are too numerous to mention, but it gets overlooked now since so many are commonplace. The split timeline for example originated there. It was a groundbreaking movie that still has elements in most of the movies you watch, without even recognizing it.

That was Madeleine Lebeau, who died in 2016 at age 92, last of the Casablanca cast.

Casablanca is famous for the line "Play it again, Sam" even though it's not in the movie.

    As Time Goes By.

Interesting story - After shooting finished the Directors actually wanted to replace it with another song. Fortunately for movie history, Bergman had cut her hair for another movie so reshoots were not possible.

Also, Charles Boyer never said "Come with me to the Casbah" in Algiers. (Though I would have loved to go there with Hedy Lamarr.)

That's weird. In The Wizard of Oz, did they want to replace "Over the Rainbow" with something else?
