Edited thread title. I don’t see that he said Mertz will be the starter but I think it’s obvious he will be. Annoying.

That's okay, we know it's going to be just as interesting to see how this unfolds.

I will still have the popcorn ready.

I hate it for Mertz but if the first drive or two fail it will get real ugly with the boo birds in the Swamp.

Just like when Tebow was a freshman and Chis leak was the starter, only we never got to see Tebow play a full game when he was a freshman. But now that we know what Lagway can do, that should change that whole perspective on our QB2. I just hope NO ONE boos Mertz.

Mertz doesn’t deserve the boo birds as he was one of the few positives from last year. He had a rough opener and I wonder if maybe he was having some cognitive issues before the game started that he didn’t report? He didn’t look nearly as sharp in decision making as a year ago. Complete speculation, but he wouldn’t be the first to hide issues to get on the field.

I would hope that’s not the case because that would be selfish of him to hide.

Graham Mertz will not save Coach Napier's job. DJ Lagway may not either but if your job is on the line who do you start.

Seems an easy answer but BN has his "process".

I’m not sure he cares about saving his job tbh. That’s the problem with these ridiculous buyouts.

If he really does not care about his job then he'll prove it if he ever starts Mertz again.

Mertz was the starter and was knocked out due to injury. He deserves the start. But there also must be a short leash. If he can't produce points he needs to be pulled.

I'm piling on Napier like most these days but I don't agree with the "he doesn't care because of his buyout" theory at all. He's in his 40s and loves coaching. If he goes out at his current trajectory he will not be a head coach at a major program again. It's just bitter fans talking st this point( I'm one of them) but everything points to a guy trying his hardest but limited with an antiquated method and thinking process.

His coaching is an amalgamation of anachronistic methods based on antiquated archetypes of football programs..:D

Mertz isn’t Leak for sure. We need to score on that first drive and not dig a hole before bringing in Lagway. I think the players want Lagway too more than likely. It’s not personal, Lagway is just good and needs to play to develop.

His ego is getting in his way. He wants to be a Spurrier but he is better suited to be an Urban.

As expected. I prefer it to be Lagway all the way but i’ma still root for Graham no matter what. I hope the last two weeks lit a fire under him and he doesn’t play timid. Would rather him let it fly and live with the results than be check down Charlie

Stating he did would be a rumor. He left the game due to a concussion which has already been speculated to possibly be a cumulative injury on these boards. Discussing what potential issues had him playing below his baseline isn’t starting a rumor. Maybe the symptoms were as simple as a mild headache and he took some aspirin thinking it would resolve. Relax dude. I like the kid, but at no point in that game did he look as sharp in decision making as he has proved to be over the past year.

I’d bet money the receivers prefer Lagway. The entire team looks different with him in, even against Miami.

I love Mertz and he’s a great Gator. I wanted him to make it to the league. The team is more important than one person and the best qb needs to start. It’s obvious who that is to anyone with eyes.
