Pregame Stuff: Florida vs Utah State (Saturday, 2:30 pm) - Florida Gators

    This from Chris Harry:
"He's now been called for at least four fouls in half the team's 10 games. Blackshear's 26.9 minutes per game are five less than he averaged last year at Virginia Tech, where he rarely was in foul trouble"

The last part is interesting to me. He was "rarely" in foul trouble at Va Tech, yet he's been in foul trouble half our games and averaged less than 5 mins a game because of it

Is it that KJ has changed his style, played more aggressive, less disciplined....OR

Is it just that the refs don't like the Gators and he's being punished accordingly

Possibly playing with a new team finds him out of position and trying to make up ground which results in a foul.

Yes possibly, could definitely be a contributing factor. He is getting a lot of phantom calls too.

I haven't analyzed this, but he does a bunch of directing on defense. With the burden of directing a young Gator hoops defense, he might be getting caught trying to clean up the messes. Likewise, the added responsibility might cause him to get behind a half step here and there.

That last game was ridiculous. At least 2 of those were not fouls.

Also a good point. Being the last line of defense and covering up freshmen mistakes might add to the total. Only takes 1 or 2 a games to make a big difference

While I agree that some of his foul calls have been a joke, it could also be that he is playing defense this year, as that is a requirement under CMW. Maybe VT didn't stress defense quite as much.

    Good point.
He's also trying to adjust to a new defensive scheme.

I went over every foul call with a few other Gator fans today after seeing this thread. I would say about 40% of them are justified. He is playing the exact same way he was at Va Tech. Take it the way you want to from this point. I have always thought we have gotten the short end of the stick(even when we won back to back) Even in games when teams are overmatched inside we get the short end of the stick..especially remembering back to the N Florida game

If he will try to get inside to score and lay off three point shooting, he would get fouled and shoot free throws. When KB chucks up a three and it doesn’t go in, then he tries to follow the ball, this has gotten him into trouble. The Butler game he shot seven threes and hit one. 6’ 10” agile with good around the basket moves, these should be his bread and butter. Free throws from driving to the hoop. he could score 15 to 20 every game. This doesn’t mean he can’t shoot threes, if he drives inside and it carries him coming outside to try again, if open and ready, then let it fly. This going inside with his ability would help him not get as many fouls. Just my take....

I am talking that really looked like a foul, look Blackshear rarely had 3 fouls in a game last year. And you can go back and look at his games and yeah even with my non educated basketball eyes along with 1 college official of mine and a former official we kind of put it together. Both have officiated A10 games..the one active official is now with Sun Belt.

Yeah I agree it's a bit suspicious that he goes from a career with no foul trouble to having 4+ fouls in half our games.

He’s trying to play harder on defense here than he was at Virginia Tech. White’s focus is always on defense and Blackshear isn’t very quick moving laterally. Not a great recipe for staying out of foul trouble.

Perhaps. If it is exposing his lack of lateral quickness, it's always better to recognize it sooner than later. If that is the case, then it's better to see it and deal with it now vs later or even too late

This is why I like having him and Omar on the floor together. Omar makes the usual freshman mistakes on defense, but--oh my!--what a cleanup man he can be as a weakside shot-blocker if Kerry stays in front of his man.
I don't think we can beat Utah State if Kerry sits a lot with foul trouble.

We have not played conference games yet, so not a true SEC versus ACC comparison yet. Could be more truth to the type of defense played in terms of zone versus man, or physical nature of the play/scheme. Coach White certainly emphasizes defense. Have not seen the 20 point scorer we saw at season end and in tourney last year. Takes time to acclimate, so truly believe this entire team will be much improved by the end of the season. Huge upside potential
