One reason why the threads here have been so helpful. Able to cut through the crap.
Thanks, Mr. Data, for pointing out California's success. I will add the empirical data from Australia.
So, mitigation does work.
California has the lowest transmission rate in the country now. 1%. After the holiday/post-holiday surge, they really got the virus under control.

And Australia is open. 7 day average of 16 cases in the entire country.

Frankly, Maher is right. And, I am sick of stupid.
So, I leave it to the right wingers to explain why we can't be like all the big cities in Australia or reduce spread like California has.
BS. We didn't do what was needed to mitigate the disease. Had we done so, we could be wide open everywhere now.
That is the lesson from the counties that did.
Because our national policy was never to accept short term pain for long term openness.
State by state comparisons are meaningless.
LOL, you trying to compare Australia to the US? So funny. And check CA’s death rate. When adjusted for age CA has a higher death rate. Way to go CA! Oh, great job on getting schools opened back up also. Top notch!
Thanks for starting this thread and attracting the covid deniers to tell us how right they are how much better their sources are and how wrong we are.
Of course Australia is comparable to the US. First world country. Large continent. Large cities, mainly on the coast. Large tourist economy in the temperate regions. But, not much in the interior.
Where Australia is different is that states throughout the US is to willing to implement policies based on superstition, misused data and the like.
Driven by a base of fools.
And, notably , you offered explanation offered for how California got to a 1% growth rate.
Remember, I was specifically addressing your comment that closedowns or lockdowns don't work. And, gave you two examples of places where they did.
One that eliminated the virus. Where they are wide open. Concerts, restaurants.
You would have made an awful lawyer. Because when judges ask you questions, you can't change the subject with snarky replies.
You are welcome
Death rate is what matters. How is CA compared to FL and TX? Very comparable. You know this but choose to dismiss it. I get it, I’d dismiss it too when you whole argument is based on a small country who is isolated from the rest of the world. Nice effort.
I love how we have gone from death counts can't be trusted to death rate is all that matters. What a thread!
I am wondering if some posters on here are just joking or are they really that dense?
Actually the thread is on how the US media has fooled the public into thinking covid is much more dangerous than it is and who is most at risk to covid.
Your thread is about what Bill Maher said. Much of which you did not listen to, apparently.
And, if you could comprehend what is written, the most liberal posters here had the death rate for the virus at 1-2% from the earliest point.
Maher said the correct answer in the poll was between 1-5%;a percentage of Dems has it at a higher rate.
1-2% is a lot of people, given the widespread infection rate.
LOL. I do love the “most liberal posters on here” routine. Very comical. Stand up is in your future. Now you are rationalizing the awful job by the US media. You are the problem. You don’t hold them accountable.
What I said about certain US media is in my reply to @gatorpika's post above.
As for the posters we both addressed, the death rates were addressed repeatedly by posters here in the "it is just like the flu" debates.
As for your repeated snark, what a giant waste of time it is to engage you in anything.
says the crazed conspiracy theorist.
It’s not a schtick, it’s a fact. Obesity is the number one public health problem in this country and for whatever reason, a lot of people, including the media, don’t want to talk about it. Over 1/3 of Americans are obese and another 1/3 more are overweight and on their way to obesity. Among blacks and Hispanics, obesity has touched nearly half of the adult population. Maher is 100% correct in this case and if you want to call it fat shaming, so be it. But if people had a healthier diet and exercised more, the COVID death numbers would have been much lower.
Step away from the edge. Earlier in the thread, I agree with him. He calls out the fat shaming, hence why I used the term. He hits it every few months so.....
Promoting a healthy diet is not fat shaming. He is spot on that we missed an opportunity to educate people about their health and to show them the consequences of poor diet. But, the food industry is very powerful. Nobody takes them on.
bill Maher never shuts up about fat people in this country lol.
I watched his episode where he covers this and he made excellent points.
but his pointing out the msm covid overreaction porn does not absolve right wing media of the dangerous lies they told either. One of his main points of the segment was to say that as liberals and moderates we must call out bad journalism at all times. But when we do so of msm right wingers are not absolved of anything. We just have to be consistent and he is not wrong.
