Damn, heard from a reliable source that UCLA Kelly Austin signed with Houston this morning as an undrafted free agent.

Sure would be interesting to know how much he signed for. I thought it odd he didn't even get selected after the 10th round but several other UCLA pitchers went.

 

Man, did we suck in the portal.

 

Why bother with portal nonsense if you are going to sign for nothing? Wasted everyone's time

 

Yeah this hurt us as it drove off a few other starter transfers. Crazy

 

The portal's still open until 7/28 and I'm sure O'Sullivan is working it to bring in a couple more guys.

 

Gotta move quick but, I have faith in Sully.
I also think our Freshman class of pitchers could be very special and we have 1 and maybe 2 Freshman that will swing it well enough to contribute next year.

 

Remember, he doesn’t have to sign them before the 28th. They just have to enter before then.

The landing spots are usually pretty clear indicators of why they’re leaving UF.

Yep - In the few opportunities he got, he did well. He's going to be a great addition to UCF, IMO.

 

Losing Lastres is unfortunate but understandable. TJ surgery set him back a year but a player of his talent needs to land in a program where he is guaranteed playing time and reps. UNC-Charlotte is a solid program and they are changing conferences- and getting more exposure. If playing pro ball is the goal and you see players from Grand Canyon (#6 overall) and FAU (#12 overall) getting drafted in 1st round then you go to a program that will give you the opportunity to shine and show scouts what you have. I'm near certain Lastres will shine and get a solid shot at pro ball.

 

That’s great, but it’s still a tight time line, I can’t see signing guys August 8th. I say that because wouldn’t they have to be Registered for classes by an early August date and wouldn’t they have to be on campus for first day of classes ( guessing late August)?

 

Regular registration closes 11:59 pm August 22, classes start August 23, and students can register until 11:59 pm on August 29 for a $100 late fee.
