Makes us the same then. But it isn't my desire nor am I accepting that it is my new normal. The sooner it is gone then the sooner life begins to it's fullest. No excuses need to be made.

My daughter is doing medical research. Through her I know several others who do medical research (no virology). One of the things they have conveyed to me is a hope that in the future we adopt an Asian attitude toward mask wearing That is it is common to wear a mask at the first sign of a cold in several Asian countries. That practice cuts down on deaths from flu. I believe their hope is in vain.

I agree that some percentage of the population is fed up with wearing masks. Some percentage is fed dealing with anti-maskers, anti-vaxers and other equally illogical positions. Some percentage is fed up with Democrats, another percentage is fed up with Republicans.

Finally, some people are fed up with hearing about all of the other people announcing that they are fed up with something.

So, best of luck with whatever personal choices you decide to make for yourself and your family. Sounds like I will make different choices.

Yes, we'll have to wait and see. It could peter out like SARS in 2004. It could become seasonal like the flu. Or it could be with us for centuries with periodic epidemics or pandemics like the bubonic plague. Or something else?

What I was firstly getting at with controlled measurement is that it's a challenge since rigorous, controlled measurement would require direct observation of a large number of people over a long period each day during an observation period. Self-reported usage and other mitigation measures likely have much more error than any findings from self-reported behavior can reveal.

I'd characterize it as a large, positive development. I wouldn't call it incredible simply because we don't have anything to measure it against other than the first two waves, which have gotten successively larger.

I would have no problem if mask wearing were the norm. I haven’t caught a cold in over a year

You realize it’s established fact that DeSantis has been suppressing covid numbers for nearly the whole pandemic, now. Been widely reported. He fired his data scientist for refusing to post false numbers to the state website, and replaced her with someone who will. Then when she kept reporting the real numbers on her own site, he sent a brute squad to seize all her computers and point gums at her children to try to intimidate her into silence.

Scientists don’t mold facts to happy-clappy desires. But it so happens that the CDC, Fauci and other scientists have come out with much more optimistic projections in recent days. Just because Fauci says we may be wearing masks into 2022, doesn’t mean it’s a foregone conclusion. He has wisely tried never to blow overly optimistic forecasts up our butts.

    This is amazing.

Did you not notice what happened a month ago? A REAL President took office. He has jacked up vaccine production and distribution. He has led by example and gotten millions of people to be more responsible with masks and distancing. AND the vaccines are working. AND we are getting past the post-holidays spikes that “the Fauci world” told us would happen and got it 100% right. As he has gotten basically everything right on every pandemic for the last 50 years.

WTH are you talking about? Fauci has no interest in being “relevant”. You sadly know nothing about his very well-known life as the leading infectious disease specialist in the country and even the word for most of his professional life. He has ZERO interest in being “relevant”. He does what he does because it’s his job.

Judging from this post, absolutely nothing about this topic.

It’s wrong to be that wrong.

Be a patriot, man. It’s really not remotely hard to wear a mask. No more than wearing a belt.

    God I hope not!

90%+ of men don’t wash their hands after going to the bathroom. #1 or #2.

What does that mean? Is there some kind of standard of mask wearing that you conform too? Or what is the standard that you expect for a non wearing moment? I find that some expect us to go to the distance when reality is the distance may already be near. You call it.

The vaccines should (hopefully) make this last wave the peak. I've read they think COVID-19 will become endemic, so it'll continue to circulate at some level, going forward it will have to be tracked to make sure the vaccines keep working and herd immunity continues to be built up. There is literally no way to predict the future, all they know is that as of now the vaccines mostly appear to be good even against all of the different variations. As long as that holds up, hopefully that at least means if there's any new waves, they are at lower and lower peaks.

I'm guessing this is why Fauci is saying maybe through 2022, because they don't actually know, it will take months for data to come in as herd immunity is built up and we see how the virus behaves against an increasingly immune population. The proof needs to be in the numbers. If all goes well I expect full stands at football stadiums in the fall. He's just presenting a possibility if everything doesn't go perfectly with herd immunity and there is still some increased level of hospitalizations or localized outbreaks. That might make them keep recommending some degree of precaution (including masks) for longer. Basically the old adage: "under promise, over deliver!". He's just delivering public messaging, not making any official prediction. Unlike Mr. "15 cases down to 0", what he's saying is realistic and responsible. Ideally if they could drive the numbers WAY down, that brings you back to where they can do the contact tracing at a far more localized level rather than any crazy lockdowns. A normal and functional CDC should be able to stay on top of it.

PD...you did a great job of explaining and yes i acknowledge that. But my friend, let us all understand that if you are on national television and you speak a point, as and expert, that the last thing you want is the trend to go against your point of view. Fauci is a consistent expert but he is not the sole point of view on a social change of direction. I think that is a part that i something he wishes weren't put on him. He knows his job but the rest is something we all need to be smart on.
I am not a "patriot" and never call me that again. I am a normal citizen with a brain and the ability to question. Never speak for Fauci because it is his choice to speak and I believe that he feels the need to speak his voice as an "expert" when there are so many others that can join the conversation. He is not a "Trump" and most likely would not want to be the voice but so may expect it of him. He speaks his words and would be shamed if he is wrong no matter your side.
My opinion, as a Director of Engineering, is to look at the trend and look at the cause and effect. Right now..the trend has dropped like a rock. Nobody but nobody can point to a reason for it. I suggest that with all pandemics that is is bottoming out but have nothing more than statistics. Guess we will play until it is gone but my god...what a change heh?

I am going to be honest. Some of you are not being very honest with what I posted. You see..I hate the mask. I hate it. Its not political. Its not social. I hate it. You hate it. l know this because it is abnormal. My post is clear. There is a growing number of people that are ready to get rid of the mask and it is probably not unjustified based on the facts. Of course some will not take the time to think of it but I say again...I believe the pandemic is simply petering out. Why? Because the amount of people wearing a mask has not increased to the numbers that would cause a decrease in the amount of infections. In other words...infections down 60 percent..mask wearing not consequential. I get it..some want an entire mask wearing public but it has NOT HAPPENED so why is the rate going down? That deseves some thought!
If you made it this far then I say again..I wear the mask! I wear it everywhere! So where is your anger?

If one would really read my original post the their is no controversy. I am very much fed up with the illiterate tendency of America where someone posts a stand and it is to hard to read an comprehend the text. I merely stated a point where I feel that mask wearing is becoming a soon to be non existent thing and I believe that Americans will make that decision before CDC does. I will be right. That is no question. What is frustrating is the lack of comprehension among computer users..for godsake learn to read! I wear a freaking mask! I am holding back on suggesting this country has gone stupid but lord it is difficult! There was a time Americans would actually debate without determining a point. You basically assumed my actual standard even when I told you that I WEAR A MASK but I DONT LIKE IT! So you LIKE IT? Seriously?

Who has ever said wearing masks is the new normal? It’s the pandemic normal.

I don’t like wearing a mask at all, or not hugging friends and family I haven’t seen in months. But so what. I do it for their protection as much as mine. The quicker people suck it up the quicker we can put this behind us. If we should have learned anything from the holiday season is what happens when we don’t. Good news is there are no big holidays for a while so unless one of the variants is completely unmanageable or vaccine resistant, we should have some running room through spring to avoid another massive outbreak.

And the masks and distancing also seem to have very much kept the flu season in check, which no one really talks about.

Re: shaking hands, I think we are all going to come put of this far more germ cognizant than before, especially regarding hand to hand transmission, touching door knobs, etc where we may have gotten a little too lackadaisical before.

I’ve seen enough men walk out of a men’s room and not wash their hands after relieving themselves. Used to work with a guy who never did, and I never once shook his hand even when he stuck it out there. Truly gross.

Nothing wrong with your post, Intimi. Wearing a mask sucks. It most certainly bothers some people more than others (some folks have to talk more throughout the day, some people will sweat more throughout the day, some people won't have as comfortable fitting masks throughout the day, some people wear glasses, etc.).

In Alachua County, wearing a mask typically indicates that you reside in close proximity to GAINESVILLE. And that's only between 8AM and 5PM for the most part. In the evening, many stores are much more lax about their mask requirement policy. Publix doesn't seem to flinch any more about people walking into the store without a mask. More people are wearing them loosely fitting or falling below their nose, etc. Mask fatigue is a real thing. Most folks are ready to be done with it.

If we are still wearing masks going into 2022, then that tells me that the vaccination attempts were not successful and/or a new problem has arisen. Just one non-expert's opinion or WAG, whatever you prefer.

This post seemingly went largely unnoticed in another thread, but there are also some optimistic perspectives out there (courtesy of @GrandPrixGator in the treatments/cures thread):

Mentioning helping intimi get back to the US in such a negative way is a low blow. He should not have to temper his comments because some here helped him return to the US.

When you help someone from your heart opposing opinions don’t matter and nothing in return is expected.

    Who likes wearing a mask?

Also, how can you possibly forget at this point?

Although I admit that I will forever use this as an excuse to not shake hands and to “distance” from a large portion of society. Before I almost had to say “Because you’re a d-wad.” Now I have “protect the elderly” to make the getaway.
