I've heard numerous pundits (some historically democratic) say recently that they think Trump will beat Biden if those are the two options. Bill Ackman was pretty adamant about it this am on cnbc. I won't vote for either which brings me to the question..

Any chance Phillips gains traction? I'd take him over either, and I'm a pretty staunch conservative. He's as moderate as I could hope for as a D nominee.

what do the board dems think?

Some WA Democrats push to get Rep. Dean Phillips on 2024 ballot as a Biden alternative

General question, is it just customary that incumbents don't have to deal with Primaries or do the parties (democrat party in this case) not allow for a primary to occur?

I think parties tend to discourage primaries against most incumbents

I think it is customary. If Biden was in his early 70s I don't think it would be an issue. I just don't think anyone wants to see him in office in 4 years. It's almost unfathomable he's even running for re-election. Trump just won't go away either. Lose-lose for the good ol usa. Hopefully it's Haley vs Phillips. Odds are probably 2% of that happening. Power brokers in DC don't want someone they can't control.

Thanks, so it's more of an unwritten rule not to hold a primary for an incumbent.

One that comes to mind is Kennedy running against Carter for the dem nomination in 1980.

There are still primaries, but the parties typically discourage challengers.

I’m not a dem but I’d take him over Biden, Trump, DeSantis, Gavin, Harris, Christie, Cheney , etc.

Why don’t some Democratic leaders get together and go to Biden and tell him to get out of the way? I know that Republican leaders in Washington are all cowards who don’t dare stand up to Trump, but how much courage would it take for some Democrats to stand up to Biden?

Not that I guess it matters. Any country that would elect Trump as president, a virtual mandate for authoritarian, vengeful government, doesn’t deserve to remain a democracy anyway, in fact doesn’t want democracy any longer, and will get its wish. No use getting upset about it. The American experiment had a good run.

My guess is Biden is being selfish and thinking that since he beat Trump once, he can beat him again. In his eyes, running an unknown against Trump is a bigger risk.

Oh yeah, because in everyone’s mind, 77 is the cutoff for being too old to run. Trump is a young man

    77 (not early 70’s, BTW)

I agree in that Biden is really all about Biden, just like Trump is all about Trump. What someone needs to tell Biden is that he's not just running against the guy he beat in 2020, he's running against a personality cult that defies all reason and decency. And he's probably going to lose. Even if Trump is in jail, which will just get him more votes. There's an old country song called "Ladies Love Outlaws." Obviously Republicans love them too.

I agree that Trump shouldn't be taken lightly just because he lost last time. But I'm not sure that any generic Democrat who actually stepped up would automatically have significantly better chances than Biden against Trump in the general. Name recognition matters for one thing. Jared Polis, Gretchen Whitmer, and Josh Shapiro are three names I've seen mentioned as rising stars, but they're certainly not household names. Of course, Republicans would quickly have talking points against any alternatives, and whoever jumped in at this point would almost certainly take a favorability hit from wherever they sit now.

Biden beats Trump & Desantis. Just about everyone else beats Biden. IMO, of course.
