One of my all-time favorites and was my go-to when I had the chance to sing on stage! Glad I got to see him again this summer.

One of the greatest live performance I have ever heard! I get chills every time I listen. Can't even imagine what it must have been like to be in the crowd. I have seen him a bunch of times and he definitely ranks in my Top 5 concerts.

2006 in the O'Dome in Gainesville. His 30th year tour. We gave him a key to the city and now the officials are saying it wasn't enough. Likely we will have a Tom Petty park or something similar when all is said and done.

There's a petition I saw to get a Tom Petty statue erected in Gainesville. That would be outstanding.

Put the statue next to Tim Tebow's.

One song that is outstanding, often ignored, is Tom's "Out of Control".

Watch this video of Petty and band performing their last two songs in their last concert at the Hollywood Bowl. At the very beginning Petty is stretched out, leaning into the piano. At the end, around the 10 minute mark, he stumbled as his hip appeared to buckle under him after he leaned over to sign an autograph. He immediately leaves the stage noticeably limping.

Along with his band the Heartbreakers, Petty helped weave the fabric of American rock-and-roll for decades. Petty and the Heartbreakers had just wrapped up a successful six-month tour on Sept. 25, but when asked if that was the band's last hurrah, Petty chuckled.

"We laugh and say among ourselves, why do they think we would quit?" he asked. "I mean, if one of us went down, or one of us died, or God forbid got sick ... then we’d stop. I think that would be the end of it, if someone couldn’t do it.”

He admitted that the 53-show, 40th-anniversary tour had been "grueling" because it was so long, but expressed interest in getting back to performing after a brief reprieve.

"I have a few things I want to deal with down the road, but I'm not ready to start yet," he said, adding that he wanted to rest an injured hip first.

Petty's final tour was joyful. You would never have known he was in severe pain. Tom had fractured his hip but he kept it a secret. He would not consider cancelling the shows to have surgery. He went out and played hurt, for months.

Tom Petty had a tough upbringing in Gainesville, Florida. His father did not know what to make of a skinny, long-haired son who didn't care about sports. He didn't want his boy to be a sissy, so he tried to beat it out of him.

It just made Tom more determined.

The following info came from a post on the Gainesville Rock History Facebook group.

This from JC Corcoran - another member of the Rock History Facebook group and a DJ somewhere in the midwest.

    Tom Petty's hip problem

"Continuing with info via my L.A. sources, almost nobody knew about it, but Tom fractured his hip just before the recent tour. He didn't want to postpone any dates because he felt obligated to his crew and fans to continue. He was on major pain killers the entire tour. He was getting shots in his hip almost nightly. I can only guess that contributed to his heart problem. Some who were at his last show a week ago at the Hollywood Bowl say he didn't look well, but nobody had any idea what it would ultimately lead to. More info when I get it. Thanks for following along with me on this story."

I am officially old and senile (old fashion word).

The song is Out in the Cold. (not Out of Control)....ooops.

Some of my all time faves of his that he performed (others may have written) were Route 66, Needles and Pins.

I'm excited to be in The Swamp this weekend to hear Petty blasting after the 3rd Quarter. What a great tribute!
