Harp on this a lot, but think it is the unified field theory to so much discord. Two tweets today (and one older related tweet) capture it well. Parenthetically, accepting such change and diminished role is hard, takes a lot of equanimity and grace
I'll be 80 in two months. I loved the halcyon days, but, man, there were a lot of creeps in them, especially those who did all in their power to prevent integration in particular and progress in general. Those same type people are with us today doing the exact same things. CONCLUSION: Things were not better in the "good old days". In fact, except for the creeps, many now armed to the teeth, things are better today. Also, your happiness, or lack thereof, is your responsibility.
Well said. Happy benchmark birthday in advance. I know things were "better" in the 80s, because I was in my 20s. I had little responsibility, primarily focused my life on personal gratification, and didn't live in pain physically. So things were "better". although I fully agree with you that things were not objectively better - I was just young. It would be unhealthy to have a 20 something life into your 60s. Life goes on. Unfortunately, reactionary impulses arising from nostalgia, while somewhat natural, now seem unchecked and downright dangerous. Literally trying to turn back the clock
Willie Jackson, and Leonard George started playing football for Florida in 1969 and were the first black UF football players. Maybe one percent of gays came out of the closet back in the old days. We watched television on piece of crap machines. We could go on and on, but there is no way the old days were better than what they should be today. We do have issues today, and we need to address them, but there’s a large segment of the population in this country and elsewhere that are not helping.
Nikki Haley is a dressed up turd. She is smart enough to know that narrative is a lie. A kid is safer in 2023 than they were in 1993 or 1983. But if you were a kid in 1983 sure the world seems harder as an adult. Nikki, like all GOP candidates traffic in fear.
