There are actually people here, on our premium BullGator Den and on blogs/Twitter etc, hopeful that Dan Mullen will leave. Some here and on the premium side have said that if he keeps Grantham it is proof that he will never win and should go.

For those people (apparently under 10 years old.) Here is a reminder.

First, something that keeps being forgotten is that Covid took away at least 2 more wins from Dan's record, and playing LSU early as scheduled is likely a win too, as LSU improved late in the season.

So theoretically he has had 3 10 win caliber teams in 3 years.

    Now the history lesson...

    Year 3 for Dan Mullen:
    • 8-4 season (with two cancelled cupcakes and no FSU cupcake to get to 10 wins)
    • 29-9 in first 3 seasons. (Add cancelled games and it would be 31 or 32 wins)
    • We were two (last second, ball in the air as the clock expired) FG's from being undefeated heading to Atlanta and being in the playoff this season.
    • We then lost to Bama by 6 points.
    • We have made 3 NY6 bowls in 3 seasons.
    • We were 12 points from being undefeated SEC champs heading into the playoffs.
    • We beat Georgia.
Now lets recap what Dan took over and had to fix...

    Year 3 for Muschamp:
    • 4-8 season
    • loss to Vandy
    • loss to Georgia southern.
    • 3rd straight loss to UGA
    • blowout embarrassment to FSU.
    • This left him 22-16 in first 3 seasons.
    Year 3 for Jim McElwain:
    • He went 3-4.
    • He was fired mid season.
    • Lied about death threats
    • got blown out by Georgia.
    • Got blown out by a crappy Michigan team.
    • This left him with 22 wins in 3 years

So to recap. Mullen is 7 wins ahead of those guys, with 2 guaranteed wins cancelled due to Covid, and a 3rd probably if LSU is not rescheduled.

He had all of his major offensive weapons opt out of a bowl game, leading to the only loss of more than one possession this season.

His 9 losses at Florida include 3 during his honeymoon season which is understandable.

But he has lost most of the remaining 6 losses here in very close fashion and/or to really good programs.

    • A 7 point loss to #4 UGA last year.
    • Late INT from tying (national champs) #1 LSU last year.
    • A FG at the gun at #5 aTm this year
    • A 6 point loss to #1 Alabama this year.
    • Played #6 Oklahoma with basically all backups on offense.
    • Tough 3 point loss to LSU this season. (A bad loss no question, but still very close)

I am sorry, but this hyperbolic reaction to one blowout loss when half the team opted out is really strange to me.

I want Grantham escorted from campus with a security team. I want Dan to shut down the NFL rumors, but in the end he is a top 5 college coach. He has outperformed Dabo in his first 3 seasons. (The same Dabo that took over a better situation and gets to coach in the ACC by the way).

We should all be praying by our beds at night that Dan Mullen is here for a decade.

    /rant. Go Gators.

If I didn't see people calling for the HC's head every 3rd game I wouldn't know I was on a Gator sports forum.

Just gives it that homey feeling, like when you sit down for thanksgiving dinner and your aunt/uncle argue about why the Turkey is too dry for 45 minutes.

The fact he didn’t have the stones to remove Grantham is a huge red flag. He didn’t even sit Marco Wilson after the shoe, in fact made him team captain for the sec championship, is another red flag. I think we all want Dan to be the guy but right now he’s revealing he is unwilling to address major problems which means his ceiling isn’t as high as we’d hoped. And this year wasn’t an anomaly for the defense either. Every team with a pulse moves the ball and converts 3rd and 4th downs on Grantham. 10 win seasons should be a regular occurrence here, we’re there under Mullen but the expectations/standard is championships and we won’t get there with Grantham or the unwillingness to make tough decisions.

Thank you Tilly! I don't know this for certain but I think Mullen is just the type that he doesn't throw people under the bus to the media, which is why he doesn't say the things we want to hear from him. The decision to fire Grantham might seem easy to us, but none of us know what's said behind closed doors and in any of these internal meetings. The guy is the QB whisperer and always plays to what the team's strength is. He's the best play caller in country.

I hope he proves me wrong but sticking with Grantham better produce at least an SEC title next year (year 4) or he can take a walk for I care.

First and 10: Will Dan Mullen be coaching Florida in 2021? It's far from certain ... (saturdaydownsouth.com)

Mullen had impermissible contact with a recruit, setting up the planned meeting via a text to tell the recruit when he would be at his high school in Seattle. The NCAA didn’t give the name of the recruit, but it’s not difficult to figure out that it was likely 5-star linebacker Sav’ell Smalls, who eventually signed with Washington.

Members of the Florida coaching staff (which Mullen is accountable for) also had impermissible contact with 7 teams that stopped in Gainesville on their way to a Tampa-area event. The staff gave players tours of the facilities.

For that, and for his “failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance,” Mullen received the harshest penalty a coach can get from the NCAA: a show-cause order, which essentially means any school other than Florida that wants to hire Mullen would have to prove to the NCAA that his hire is justifiable.

While this may seem ticky-tack on the outside, it’s far from that within the Florida administration. Florida was a rogue school in the late 1980s, breaking NCAA rules with the rest of the SEC’s outlaws at the time.

From the moment former athletic director Bill Arnsparger hired Steve Spurrier in 1990, everything changed. Spurrier declared Florida didn’t have to cheat to win the SEC, and then went out and proved it.

I completely agree. I am dumbfounded by the recent attitude of our fans towards Mullen. Our program was trending up, we had two solid seasons under Mullen in 2018 and 2019, and this year had an historic year offensively, but sadly an historic year defensively that undid it. But for covid, I do not think we would have lost ANY regular season games, and thus wouldn't have lost until we played the Gumps in the SEC Championship. I don't understand why people don't get that--we dropped three patsies due to covid and picked up 2 SEC teams, one of whom beat us. And I also agree that had we played LSU as normally scheduled, we would not have lost that game. By the time we played Oklahoma, key players had opted out, the team wasn't motivated, and we predictably got beat. I don't like it, but it happens. Personally, I feel that the "opting out" crap is complete BS, and clearly put our team and Mullen in a bad position.

Mullen is making changes in our defensive staff, and we have a solid class of recruits coming in. People need to stay the course; Mullen has done a good job, and I truly do not see anyone on the horizon who would come here and do a better job. Two months ago everyone was talking about what a great job he was doing. Making a change now would really, really hurt our program. We badly need stability.

Setting aside the insanity of wanting Mullen out after those results, there is ZERO positive to this program cycling through yet another coaching regime after 3 seasons.

Stability and a return to relevance was the most important result that this hire had to yield. Rebooting again after 36 months isn't going to move things ahead.

Recruiting out west is such a waste of resources. There is more than enough talent in FLA and south Georgia to win every year.

I have seen almost no one wanting him to leave, and almost no one is comparing him to Mac or champ performance wise.
The questions being asked are - is he committed to Florida, is he representing us well between the bizarre post games and show cause, and is he committed to doing the things he needs to do to win championships? The Grantham thing falls into the latter category.

Imagine what this season would have been sans COVID:

    1) We would not have played aTm (which was added to our schedule while Georgia and Alabama had SEC bottom-dwellers added to theirs). Hence, no loss for that game.

    2) We would have had three cupcakes on the schedule, hence 3 automatic wins.

    3) We would have played fsu and beat the snot out of them.

    4) We would have played LSU earlier in the year before they gained some footing with their young team. Probably another win.

    5) We would likely have headed into the SEC Championship game 12-0, then probably lost the same close SEC Championship game to Alabama.

    6) We would have then been ranked 4th as a one-loss team and journeyed to the playoffs. At that point, we probably would have lost to Alabama again, but, who knows.

Things would have been much different. Dan would probably be sitting at 12-2 this year. No shoe impact. No last-drive fumble in College Station. No mass opt outs in the OU game. East Champions with our first-ever trip to the CFP. Nothing to sneeze at. The heat on Grantham would be the same, but...

Dan Mullen is my Head Coach.

Thanks Tilly, you summed it up with facts.
Lets not forget last year we played the NC closer and tougher than anyone AT their Home field with two DL barely playing.

    yeah Grantham should go.
But if he doesn't people think that Mullen should go and won't win anything of importance.....

The nitpicky on how a player is dealt with for a stupid move... GOOD GOD!

Some fans are complete and utter jackasses and should just STFU. They are as bad as people saying Saban should leave when the Gumps lose a game.

Agree. It’s ridiculous what some people think. We had a rough end of the year. Still a respectable season and IMO Mullen is “on track” to get us back to the top.

Do we need better recruiting? Yes.

Should we reevaluate the defense? Yes.

Does that mean firing the DC? Not necessarily.

Agreed. Don’t think many fans want him gone and believe he’s done a good job, but they also don’t want a coach that appears to have one foot out the door. Apparently there is some issues between him and the administration (according to Twitter-take that for what it’s worth). Maybe they don’t want to play the games or maybe they aren’t giving him all the support he wants. I don’t think it’s crazy fans causing it. He knew they existed before he took the job.

I don't think people are too upset with his performance. It's his actions and things that he has said or hasn't said. He has been out of line several times this year. The fact he did nothing about Grantham and the D all year has cause problems. Now there are rumors about him wanting to go to the NFL. He needs to either shut those rumors down or go get an interview. By all means we want him as our guy but the side show needs to be put away for a bit

Tilly I love you man and agree with everything in your OP. But your incessant bashing of ‘throat slash’ Grantham and indirectly CDM for not canning him mid season is only fueling the fire you’re now trying to put out. To this point, the single biggest gripe all these “ten year olds” you refer to have with Mullen is the fact that Grantham is still here.

I think everybody needs to quit all the bitching and consider that this head coach of ours you’re heaping praise on with this thread has reasons for doing what he’s doing (and not doing), and if he’s as great as you say he is then we should put our trust in him to run this program his way.

I haven't been keeping up, but to be honest I think it's all noise to try and get him a raise. Coaches have a vested interest in making teams think they're always keeping their options open, particularly if they want more money. Could it be real? Of course. But it's not like I can do anything about it, and I'm going to choose not to lose sleep over it until something actually happens.

I think he's looking for the Lincoln Riley treatment right now. NFL rumors start swirling and we give him a blank check to lock him up for the next decade. Personally, I'd rather do that than take a trip to the roulette table every 4 years until we find the next guy.
