As for Shorter I don’t think that he could get open on a regular basis when he isnt a secondary receiver, another words he depends of the other receivers to have success and his hands are just average.

If it's ash , than that could be interesting bc he did pretty well with Ohio states DB's under Meyer in 2014 and 2015. Good enough to land a HC gig at Rutgers.

" Ash was hired by Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer in January 2014 to improve a Buckeye defense that placed 110th nationally in pass defense and 46th in total defense in 2013. In his first season, OSU's defense ranked 19th nationally in total defense (342.4 ypc), 26th in scoring defense (22.0 ppg), 13th in pass efficiency defense (108.17) and 28th in pass defense (201.1 ypg). The Buckeyes also ranked fourth nationally with 24 interceptions, fifth in turnovers gained (33), 16th in third-down defense (34.4%), 13th in sacks (3.00 pg) and 14th in tackles for loss (7.3 pg) en route to a Big Ten and National Championship.

In 2015, the Ohio State defense continued its strides under Ash, ranking second nationally in scoring defense (15.1 ppg) and ninth in total defense (311.3 ypg), as well as 16th in passing defense (184.5 ypg) and 22nd in rushing defense (126.8 ypg). It also ranked sixth in pass efficiency defense (104.78) and ninth in sacks (2.92 spg). The No. 7 Buckeyes defeated No. 8 Notre Dame, 44-28, in the Fiesta Bowl, finishing the year with a 12-1 record and a No. 4 ranking in both The Associated Press and Coaches Polls."

yep. Some people have hands and some dont. Larry Fitzgerald rarely dropped a pass but someone like Terrell Owens was notorious for dropping passes

I think one of the issues with Shorter this season was he didn't know the whole playbook and was only allowed to run specific routes. He came in kind of late and only got clearance to play immediately right before the season started. It felt like there may have only been a small package of plays he would get put in on, especially at the beginning of the season. I think being able to go through Spring practice, where he will have a chance to really immerse himself in the playbook and run all the routes as the primary receiver will be a big help in him being able to get open. I think they will line him up very similar to how they used Kyle Pitts, where he can use his size against smaller DBs or slower LBs to his advantage. Of course he's never going to be able to take the top off of the defense but hopefully he'll really learn to use the skills he has to beat defenders with his length.

So anything new on Ash or Strong? I asked in Raygator new defensive coaches thread but they’re to busy arguing whether the new guy sucks.

Agreed. The amount that Shorter was used increased significantly from the first game to the last, but that does not mean he was prepared for his usage at the end of the season, and it showed. If he had been a TF or RF, he would never have been able to be used as much as he was, but he will really be benefitted from a spring and fall camp. I would even throw Gamble into that camp as well. When he got thrown into being a primary target against OU, he wilted. I think he will do better when he becomes more accustomed to the pressure. He was completely frustrated and lost his head.

I would love to see what Mullen could cook up with getting Gamble for TE, Zip at HB, Davis and Bowman in the slot and Hernandez taking the top off the defense.

Neither could swain as a sophomore. Neither could Louis Murphy as a sophomore.
    Neither can most sophomores.

He has plenty of time to develop and get better.

Rumor is he’d coach safeties as well as have the title Assistant Head Coach. I think Brewster may be tight ends coach and associate head coach.

lots of titles to give people more money than just what a position coach makes along with some extra prestige.

Good news. I guess that's it now for early enrollees with the 12 HS guys and two transfers?

I just don’t see how it makes sense for a potentially elite TE to go to a team that barely uses TE. Mullen can make this man a first round draft pick. Ofc I’m biased but this is a no brainer, I would think.

kid kinda homesick too so I can’t fault him for that because we can say the same for Bowman. Why would he transfer to UF when Mullen doesn’t have a track record of producing great backs
