If this starts to become a trend, it could change the balance of power in college sports, not just basketball. I had often wondered over the years why this hadn’t already happened, but he is the first five star to go to an HBCU since ESPN’s database started.

Five-star recruit Maker picks Howard over UCLA

Very cool. If I was top end recruit I'd do the same, but at Hawaii.

Kids typically go to (insert D1 school here) because of TV contracts. Not too many Howard games on TV. Good on this kid though. I like it.

It will be a bit of a reality check when he is bussing to games and the facilities are nowhere near the big time facilities, but I’m sure he thought it through and figured it was still worth it.

Howard is the most highly regarded HBCU. If he's NBA bound after one year it doesn't matter where he goes, but it looks good for Howard.

If this starts a trend it’ll definitely be Maker’s mark on the game.

Methinks most of the "decisions" regarding where to play in college has a little bit to do with the TV contract and a LOT to do with the college team's shoe contract. But that is okay, this has nothing to do with the Blue Bloods. Honest.

Glad to see a 5 Star taking the road less traveled and not being "dazzled " by the perks that carpet college sports. Too many of the other going on.

In terms of academics, but in terms of basketball, the best would be Southern University coached by former Kentucky player Sean Woods.

Howard will not attract enough high star kids to survive the one and done kids like Duke and KY can do. You also have to consider lesser facilities, lesser food and nutrition, lesser equipment and development, lesser competition in practice, and lesser coaching in comparison to a top 5 program. Howard schedule is also playing against lesser opponents in games. Think this decision actually impedes his development and preparation for the NBA.

I am wearing a Howard T-shirt right now. Kinda weird.
