Uhm have you seen the teams we played? If that carries through October I'll be impressed.
Aaaaand 11th in the SEC on 3rd down.
I'm a Grantham fan; don't get me wrong. And given the injuries we've dealt with, I think he's done a good job with the defense the last two years. Having your best corner and best pass rusher out for the last three games hasn't helped. But we have to get better on 3rd down. Not getting off the field bleeds into the offense and their rhythm. Sort of like how not staying on the field offensively through most of the Muschamp era and more than half of the Mac era bled into our defense and caused fatigue.
Have you seen who some of the other teams have played?
Bama? Clemson? Georgia had ND. Oklahoma?
What is the main reason. What do we change from 1st and 2nd down.that makes 3rd down easier?
Every team has warts, even great ones.
If we improve just 2 times more a game will make a big difference. Also gives us 2 more series a game, maybe 10-15 plays more a game. So what is the answer
It doesn't even seem like 3rd down is the issue as much as 3rd and long is the issue. I think we are pretty good when it's 3rd and 3 or less. But if its 3rd and 10 or longer, we just give it up time after time. It doesn't even make sense.
3rd down blitz. Loves to do this even though it works like 10% of the time. Gurantee he will do this to try and rattle Auburn.
I hope its successful.
And it's usually a screen pass or a QB run that gets us on those 3rd and longs.
Bama's Opponents: 10-14
Not sure the point. Are we comparing cupcakes? Those statistics are relative to the competition played. Let’s see if it holds through better competition.
That unfortunately will take a hit this weekend
U play who’s on the schedule. There’s been plenty of years where we were stacked on d and not put up those numbers
That’s great. I’d expect those numbers against the schedule they just played. I’m only saying it would be more impressive against the schedule that’s coming. Stats don’t tell the entire story is all I’m saying.
It would be curious to see how many of those picks and fumbles came on 3rd and long. Maybe its a big play in either direction...
Clearly, Auburn will score 273 point, all on third and 95.
Happy to oblige.
Yup. That's what's frustrating to me. It's like we don't know where the 1st down mark is. It's either they get flagged for holding even if the opponents are trying to catch the ball about 10 yards short of the 1st down, or the QB scrambles to get the 1st down because we only rush 3 and pull everybody back. On 3rd and long, they can let the WRs in front of them catch the ball short of the 1st down as long as they tackle after the catch. But the problem is the miss tackles that allow the opponents to get the 1st down. Or they lose containment because they watch the QB instead of the WR they are covering. I remember Pruitt's defense in 1995. It was a bend, but don't break philosophy. It was ok because we had a great offense. When they ran into a great defense, the offense just couldn't muster enough points to save them. It's not like they didn't have talent on defense. They had Mcgrew, Daniels and Church leading the defense. Not to mention the talented LBs and DBs they had that year.
Pruitts defense was never ok. Wasted one of the best defensive lines we ever had in 94. Got exposed in 95 when they left. Spurrier used to say their best defensive play was a dropped pass. It is what lead to him hiring zook and subsequently earning a natty. Doubt it happens without a legitimate defense even with that amazing offense in 96
Edit...was supposed to write stoops
You mean the one game lost? That game had nothing to do with any defensive philosophy.
