Haven’t you guys noticed when I say: “I’ll bet you an airport beer”?

I typically fly about 40 trips/year, so much so that I rarely fly for leisure. I use my points for long expensive flights when I do. Airport food and beverages have been gouging for decades. There are a few places in each airport where you can get good food and drink for a decent price.

FWIW, I’m a proud Bud Light drinker (when I drink beer) for many years. Lived in Busch Suitcases at UF. Someone always had them on sale for $5 or less.

Yep Busch suitcases were 4.99 every other weekend or so at Publix in the early 80's. Made many a Friday trip there to stock up for the weekend.

Having a couple of those beers is what I used to call "expense account drinkin' ". And ordering the $75 tomahawk steak is "expense account eatin' ". It's something I'd never do with my own money but would do occasionally on business until I'd got the nasty gram from accounting.

We would always keep an extra one in the fridge on weekends to take to Late Night!

There is no "high levels of competition" at airports. Things generally cost double at the concourses because the vendors are paying double the price on rent. But I think I see what you are saying, nonetheless.

I totally agree that the cost of the space is a big reason why prices are so high at airports, but if your numbers are accurate, that might be evidence of competition. If things cost twice as much to market at airports and there was little competition, I might expect these things to be priced three times as high.

Sam Adams is still independently owned by Jim Koch. They haven't sold out.

I did the Sam Adams brewery tour in Boston and then took the trolley, the driver was hilarious. Definitely something you should do if you are in Boston.

Airport concessions will charge what the market will bear. If Sam Adams doesn't sell they will find some other product that will. Personally I'm not a Sam Adams fan so it doesn't apply to me.

As for the airport vendors they a captive audience and the individual airports decide who they will rent/lease space to based in part on federal law.

Not sure why but if I even get a whiff of yingling (sp. on purpose) I get a headache. It's probably that special wooder they use in Philly.
