I've been waiting 4 years to go to the SEC tourney and watch UF....and this year I'll be out of town.
I am watching live stats and I think we won! Unless there is extra time. Says final now, good job ladies!!
We won 2-1. This team is improving! Also, this should just about guarantee that we'll make the SEC tournament. And two of our final three matches are against teams that are below us in the SEC standings. Things are looking better.
I was switching back and forth between the soccer and volleyball games. But what I did notice was a lot of hard, determined, physical play from our team on the soccer field. Tenacious defense and now we've tied 3 and won 2 in our last five games, all SEC games. Pretty good, actually. Congrats to the UF soccer team.
OMG what is happening? I have been a major critic of the soccer coach and the last 5 games 3 ties and two wins. I guess she will be back next year.
Not so fast, my friend. This has been a decent stretch and the last 2 wins were impressive. But we're still only 10th in the SEC with a bunch of games left to play. Let's see how it all plays out.
After watching a replay, it's clear that their teamwork on offense is improved. They are starting to play with meaningful possession. (As opposed to UF's purposeless possession game in the final few years of Becky Burleigh.) There are still big problems on defense. CSB still has her defenders push way too high for their (lack of) foot speed. Gemma works hard, but struggles when the attacker pivots around her. Against the dribble, Barnes almost always resorts to stabbing at the ball - often resulting in getting beaten. On State's goal, both happened - leaving Upton stranded against two attackers as Gemma and Barnes helplessly chased the play. But the worst effort was from Johnston (who I've been a fan of all season). She was near midfield as the attacker pivoted around Gemma and then evaded Barnes' stab. If Johnston had sprinted back toward goal, she would freed Upton to defend the ball while she (Johnston) defended the passing lane to the eventual goal scorer. Instead, despite a clear view of Gemma and Barnes beaten, she jogged back without closing the gap to the second attacker (who scored). If I had been CSB, I would have been furious. That "effort" was simply unacceptable.
A win would be unbelievable. A tie, and a point, would be outstanding and - while not probable - are within the realm of possibility.
