UF vs UNF: 3-0 at halftime. UF is dominating possession. Granted, UNF is playing soft defensively, but UF is making a definite effort to avoid their kickball style of play. Freshmen are making a difference when they get their chance.
I expect UNF to increase their pressure when UF's defenders are trying to pass laterally. I'm interested to see if the defenders will maintain their composure, or panic and revert back to kickball.
UF scores their 5th goal with 5:40 remaining. Final score UF 5, UNF 0. UNF didn't increase their defensive pressure in the 2nd half, but it didn't matter. Pretty much every UF player had goal fever after the 4th goal, and the direct style of play returned. I don't know why they would spurn the opportunity to hone their possession style, which was clearly effective, when the game was well in hand. But spurn it they did, and the coaching staff apparently was fine with that. It's illogical to me that the players are inclined to play long, low percentage passes - especially because they (frankly) aren't very accurate passers even on short ones.
SS needs to start now to scour D1 collegiate soccer (football) for a rising star or established coach and look to hire them immediately at season end. Playing at best the lower half of the SEC does not cut it at the University of Florida. We have a proud culture of a winning tradition embedded in Gator Sports.
I'm looking forward to seeing if we can beat UCF tonight. However, USF is giving Boise St. all they can handle in Tampa and I hate turning that game off. The soccer team better make it worthwhile!
UCF is 4-0 and beat LSU Sunday. Halftime it's 0-0 and the Gators actually had more opportunities. They kept settling for impossible shots outside the 18 line instead of trying to work it in for closer shots. Midfield passing remains a problem, but the defense looks good. It's drizzling and the field is getting wetter. 1 slip or bad pass could decide the match.
UCF scores with 3 minutes left and beat us 1-0. It was a very physical game, but our offense is just so anemic. Can't put multiple passes together to mount any kind of attack. It's going to be another long season, I'm afraid.
After tonight my prediction of the 5th best program in the state is jeoprody. It looks like 6th best. Thank goodness for UNF with no money and pitiful facilities so we dont finish last.
Florida Soccer Loses 1-0 to UCF - Florida Gators Florida actually outplayed them until the last 5 minutes. UCF just turned up the heat and we couldn't handle it. We have some good players on the team, but they're not elite. And I don't think they're being coached very well. Our 1st half goalkeeper has a very weak leg, especially compared to our 2nd half GK. The forwards try to take it on their own way too much, even against 3 defenders, often losing the ball or just taking a long shot that has zero chance of going in the net.. When you have 3 defenders on you, other players have to be open and yet they don't look to pass the ball. The midfielders can't pass accurately and both midfielders and forwards often get boxed in with one or two other teammates in a small area instead of going cross field to wide open teammates. Our defenders seem pretty good, but too often instead of controlling the ball and working up the field, they and the goalkeepers just kick it in the air and allow the opponent to regain control. I'm NOT a soccer fan at all, but I know a little about the game and love the Gators. I remember in Becky Burleigh's heyday, Gator soccer was consistently the best in the SEC, dominated the state and was a national contender. We have fallen so far over the last 6-8 years, it's going to take an elite coach and a couple of years of high level recruiting to get us back in the conversation.
Ocala, everything you noted was exactly why SS hired a coach that had zero clue how to run or coach a P4 program. I remeber when she was hired, her 3 biggest attributes were that no one had transferred, her players graduated and she had a great family. Your analysis of the goalie and O attack tells me she doesn't want to make anyone mad, typical elementary participation coach, plus no clue how to get her players attacking or in position. I predict 14th in the SEC with no real improvement in the future. Our best hope for a change is doing a reverse run in the SEC.
And if you read today how Stricklin threw our baseball coach under the bus and suspended him for the first 3 games of the upcoming season because of his cussing rant against Coastal Carolina people for not notifying him of the pushback in the start of their elimination game with East Carolina, you'll see he doesn't really have our coach's back either. O'Sullivan knew he overreacted and apologized the next day, but the NCAA said he had violated a code of conduct clause and so our AD decided to go further and suspend him.
