Welcome Jalen. He is the son of former NFL QB and assistant coach John Kitna. The Gators extended an offer earlier this year to the 6-foot-4, 200-pounder and it's been QB coach Brian Johnson and head coach Dan Mullen who have been in touch so far.

"I talk with both him and Coach [Dan] Mullen, the head coach. They keep up with me and I've thought we've had some good conversations about what they do and what I am looking for in a team. We both fit each others standards pretty well and I think they are both excited. I still want to get out there and see Florida, so it's kind of what the NCAA allows in the coming months. That is where I am at right now."

My first reaction is shock that Jon freaking Kitna has a kid this old. Man, I'm old.

He's way, way down the rankings, though he has good size (6'4) and the 247 page lists him with a pretty nifty 4.60 40. Statistics aren't terribly impressive either (seven TDs and seven INTs last year). He's the second quarterback in the class, so taking a shot that he turns into another Trask might be reasonable enough, depending on how the coaches view the overall scholarship situation.

Plus, if, for whatever reason, Emory leaves before 2021, we'll go into the season with a QB depth chart of Richardson and Del Rio, so maybe this is insurance.

    I didn't see that coming.

Only 5-7 more scholarships to give.

This is kind of a head scratcher to me. He's a pro style QB, which doesn't really fit Mullen's system (Trask aside), with a pretty mediocre offer list and stats. I'm not saying this kid isn't good or won't be good, but he's currently the 2nd lowest rated kid in the class. I'm just not sure offering him this early makes a lot of sense from our end, with so few offers left.

What I wonder is if maybe this kid and/or his dad, believes his future may be more as a coach and wants to learn from one of the best offensive minds in the college game (ala Brian Schottenheimer). Since his dad had a pretty good NFL career, maybe they agreed it would be better to be a PWO at a school working with a coach who may have a lot more to offer than a scholarship.

I know very little about him. Nice arm, fairly quick and high QB IQ.

He was listed at 190 lbs last year as a junior, and he looks like a tall drink a water in the still pics I saw of him. Played for Reedy HS out of Texas last year, and played at a prep school out of AZ the year before. To be fair 4 of the 6 INT's he threw last year, were thrown in one game last year..... where he also went 9 for 20 passing too and no TD's. However his stats for his Soph year pretty much mirrored junior year. Completing just barely 50% of his passes for 1474 yard, throwing 16 TD's and 17 INT's. In as far as all the INT's....that's a lot of INT's but I have no idea if he was working with an offenses that stressed the vertical game? Wondering to myself if depending how the scholarship situation works out this year, if he'll be a walk on? He pluses seem to be his pedigree and measurable's only. He sure looks like a Kyle Trask type QB to me............

Hudl film looks really good. He looks like a young Dan Marino throwing motion wise. Big kid too. Nice complement to Del Rio in case someone transfers or gets injured. I think Del Rio is obviously more dual threat, but I like his film. Notice how many long passes he throws? Lays it right in there too. Let the hardest worker win.

I suspect Carlos was already apprised of the situation beforehand and is perfectly fine with it. It is true folly to go year after year with only 3 scholarship QBs on your roster as we have the past 2 years and would be at least 3 years if for not taking 2 QBs in this cycle. With injury and the near constant transfer of backup QBs around the nation you can quickly find yourself facing the distinct possibility of having to play a walk-on QB or converted skilled position athlete at the position. Not a place an upper level Power 5 program should ever be in.

Never doubt the skill set of a kid from an NFL coach type dad...

Yeah we're not getting 2 highly ranked qb's in one class. We were probably milimeters away from Trask being out for the season after that hit against Auburn and Nick Sproles would've been the backup to Emory.

Yea welll...there once was a kid we had at QB named Skyler who was the son of an NFL coached kid annnnnddd.......

Just jiving. I don't mind taking two QB's but I'm not sure in giving Kitna the greenlight NOW. Nobody worth a salt was beatongbeating down his door for a committment. Odd timing
