The primary role of HS is to educate not play sports. HS sport is a privilege and the only requirements are to keep your nose clean and get decent grades. If a player in any sport, no matter how good, cannot maintain at least a C+ avg they should not be allowed to play. That time would be better spent in tutoring or teaching the kid a vocational skill. Pushing a kid along academically(D to D+ avg) because he has some semblance of athletic talent is doing him/her a great disservice for their future.

Sometimes your best isn’t good enough though. It sucks that some kids may have nfl talent but are never given the opportunity. If they are baseball players, they have another avenue. Football, college is essential and there are many factors that may cause a kid to not be able to make it. Not everyone has the same support system growing up.

Today, the primary role of any university is to make money. If you happen to get an education along the way, great. College has become a financial scam.

That might be their primary goal if they've lost sight, but, education is still their primary role.

I've seen clips of Manuel and boy he is a raw talent. He has the tools to be great but it may take a while.

Are his grade issues true or just hearsay

To the disagreements, nobody is talking about pushing a kid through because of sports. I'm talking about who really gives a RA if a kid can maintain a C average to play a sport, its a SPORT.... something physically required to be able to do. We're not asking genius level kids to pass up their academic achievements to play, but we force physically gifted kids to give up sports for academics. This is entertainment , idgaf if the Jessies and Joes can solve geometry graphs while curing cancer and writing a thesis on the effects of weather on the isle of madascar.... Ffs it's a game for our entertainment and I wonder all the time how many athletes that would probably be hall of famers but are not b/c they didn't have the grades.

I had a long rebuttal to this but decided it wasn't worth it and will just SMH. Neither of us will agree on this.

That’s always been an unconditional trait in my mind. I tell my kids I won’t eat your lunch for screwing up but not trying is absolutely unacceptable. It’s the one thing you always have control over

And your kids are lucky to have you for teaching them that. Everyone doesn’t have that at home, sports are the only chance some have as they are so far behind they never really have the opportunity to catch up..

Issue for whom? Folks that think kids shouldn't be asked to obtain a high school education?

In high school? Or after high school? Is your issue that the NFL wont employ a 16 year old? Not real sure what you are getting at.

I believe if you want to represent a School by playing a sport, you should be asked to do schoolwork.

However you feel about the importance of the grades is kind of irrelevant, these kids are not being asked to cure cancer and right thesis statements in high school. They are being asked to maintain a 70% completion rate of material that any non mentally retarded people in our society should be able to accomplish easily. Whether or not you think they should is not important, instead it is important to ask why they are not able or willing to complete such an easy task. Anyone who thinks basic high school requires an IQ above 70 is mistaken.
