Just seems ironic to me that both teams and their fans have to travel some 2500 to 3000 miles in Santa Clara, California in the San Francisco Bay Area to play in their Championship Game. Ideal location would have been in the New Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Clemson maybe about 150 miles to to the east in Greenville, South Carolina from the MB Stadium. And Alabama some 200 miles to the west in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from the MB Stadium In Atlanta.

Analysts: Tide-Tigers fatigue won’t turn away fans

Expect viewers to tune in despite another powerhouse rematch

    By Matt Murschel Orlando Sentinel
Signs of Alabama and Clemson fatigue are starting to show.
It’s the fourth consecutive season during which these top tier programs have met in the playoffs and their third showdown in the title game.

Analyst Chris Fowler, who will be calling the game for ESPN, understands why some people may be tired of seeing the same two teams play for the title again, but he stopped short of calling another rematch bad for college football.

“We have the two best teams, so you can’t ask for more than that,” Fowler said during a teleconference previewing the matchup Friday. “You have star power and storylines … but are there fans out there who are envious of the success of these two programs? Absolutely. They would like to have a piece of it for themselves; I totally understand that.”
Fowler would like to see some changes, adding, “I think there’s a massive need for fresh blood in the playoff. … I don’t like the idea that the power is concentrated more and more at the top. But as for a championship matchup when it comes down to play for the trophy, I don’t know how you can complain about the two best teams. Unlike an NBA series — it’s not best of seven — they just meet once a year for all of it.

Saban retires after this one. Bama goes into a tailspin after hiring Butch Jones to replace the legend. They sink into the depths of Tennessee despair and, when no one thinks they can get any lower, the NCAA busts them for all the dodges and strips them of the titles from 2009-2018.

    Too much?

NFL prospects step closer to championship goals

Clemson’s pro-bound players eager to showcase skills

    By Pete Iacobelli Associated Press
CLEMSON, S.C. – Clelin Ferrell fidgets in his seat, knowing how close — and how far away — looms what he returned to Clemson to capture: The national championship. The talented defensive end is near the top of most mock NFL drafts and was a first-round candidate this time a year ago when he announced he would return to school for a shot at another crown. Ferrell was part of a core group of starters — defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, defensive end Austin Bryant, left guard Mitch Hyatt — considered high-round pro prospects who returned to the college grind this season.

“The goal wasn’t to come back here,” Ferrell said of reaching the title game. “The goal was to win a national championship, and we didn’t do that yet.”
It’s not a stretch to say Clemson couldn’t have gotten this far without the return of its core of NFL-caliber leaders.

Ferrell, Bryant and Wilkins fuel a front four on a defense that leads the country with 52 sacks and 108 tackles for loss. The group has been so stout up front that even with backup Albert Huggins playing for suspended starter Dexter Lawrence at defensive tackle, Clemson posted six sacks — its most in a game this season — on Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book in a 30-3 loss at the Cotton Bowl last week.

I like the over on that total points line. I suspect this is going to be high scoring. I don't like that Alabama secondary against Clemson's wideouts and I don't like anyone's D against Bama.

If Clemson can keep it close early (unlike OK did), it should be a good game.

History shows Saban knows when to gamble in title games
Known for precision, coach’s gutsy calls large factors in 2 recent wins
    By John Zenor Associated Press
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Nick Saban showed he’s capable of derring-do in Alabama’s past two national-championship game wins.
The coach famed for his scowl, his process and meticulous down-to-the-tiniest detail nature — even eating the same salad daily for lunch and, of course, oatmeal creme pies for breakfast — has turned title games in the Crimson Tide’s favor with two gutsy calls.

When thinking of Saban, a gambler or risk taker isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But when the time is right, the coach has stepped outside the box. In January 2016, Saban’s fourth-quarter onside-kick call propelled Alabama to a 45-40 win over Clemson by not only setting up a touchdown drive but keeping Deshaun Watson & Co. off the field.

    CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Distance to CFP title game can be burden for some families
    By Josh Dubow Associated Press
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Joshua Casher had a couple of carloads of friends and family make the drive to the College Football Playoff championship last year in Atlanta when it was only a few hours away from his hometown in Mobile, Ala.

With Alabama playing the championship game this year all the way across the country in the Bay Area, Casher’s traveling party for his final college game as a Crimson Tide lineman is much smaller.
“It’s just my mother. She’s excited but I’m a nervous wreck,” Casher said Saturday. “It’s her first time on a plane. It was pretty difficult financially. You didn’t want to step ahead. We had to make sure we made it to the national championship before we started making plans. Things were a bit difficult but I’m glad I was able to get her out here.”

The CFP helps with the cost, giving each player a $2,500 travel stipend for friends or family members for both the semifinals and final, along with six tickets to each game.

Swinney’s QB switch to Lawrence key move in run to title game
Tigers thriving behind strong-armed freshman with Alabama on deck
    By Pete Iacobelli Associated Press
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The choice was clear for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney last September— freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence deserved to start over well-liked, well-respected senior Kelly Bryant.
It’s a move that could’ve led to dissension, in-fighting and a divided locker room. Instead, the switch started the second-ranked Tigers on a glide path to the national championship game where they’ll take on defending champion Alabama on Monday night.

“It’s just a situation where (Lawrence) has been in the game, he has been productive and to be fair to competition, just like we do at every position, coach (Swinney) decided to name him the starter,” Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said.

Swinney insists, that despite Lawrence’s talent, the swap wasn’t made with Alabama in mind.
“You’ve got to prove that you deserve to be the starter this year,” he said Saturday. “That’s just the culture we have.”
