Jeff Monken Press Conference Quotes: Navy
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point football head coach Jeff Monken met with members of the local media on Tuesday afternoon for his weekly press conference inside Nowak Auditorium.
The Black Knights will take on Navy on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the 120th Army-Navy Game presented by USAA. The contest will be aired on CBS.
    (Ref.: Opening Statement)
"Excited to be here. It's the biggest game of the year and what I think is the greatest rivalry in sports. It is a game like no other. I can't even describe the intensity and the feelings that come with this game and that certainly extends beyond our locker room. I know that the Corps of Cadets and people out there in the Army are getting excited about this game. It is going to be a tremendous challenge. We are facing a terrific football team. They are a well-coached team. It is amazing that these games continue to be incredible battles regardless of what the situations are with either team. Just look at the last five years that I have been a part of this game, every one of them has been a one score game. Hopefully in this game we will be able to keep it in a position where in the fourth quarter we'll have a chance to win the game as we did last year."

(Ref.: On how important it would be for the senior class to win all four games against Navy)
"I think it would be a tremendous source of pride for our senior class to be able to do that. As I said, it's going to be a great challenge. The team that were facing is an outstanding team coached by Kenny (Niumatalolo) and the staff. So none of what we've done in the past will have anything to do with this Saturday. Each of them is a game all to themselves and the 2019 Army team is going to have to try to beat the 2019 Navy team and that's all there is to it. This game is just going to be a battle by itself so I hope we can find a way to get it done.

(Ref.: On Navy QB Malcolm Perry)
"We saw that guy as a senior in high school on the recruiting trail and knew he was a special athlete. To be able to play quarterback every single snap for them gives him the opportunity to carry the ball all the time, more than he did at slot bock, Kenny recognized them and created an offense that really revolves around his skillset. He's carried that team. He's done a great job. They have other guys that are good players. They have receivers with big catches and b-backs making big plays and slotbacks and offensive lines creating holes for their guys. They have a good football team and a good offense. He is a special player. He is fast and elusive. It doesn't matter who they play and how small the space gets around him, he still seems to find a way to gain yards. He is very dangerous."

(Ref.: On his favorite part of the historic rivalry)
"The only thing that is fun about this game is winning it. And I will tell you that to be on the losing side of this game is agony. Fortunately, as an assistant and a head coach I haven't had to experience that a whole lot. I had the good fortune of working for Paul Johnson, who was a tremendous coach and he won all the games that we were a part of in this rivalry and we've won the last three. And man I'm going to tell you, there's no feeling like it when you win this game and there's no feeling like it when you lose this game.

    • The Black Knights face the Midshipmen in the 120th Army-Navy Game, presented by USAA, on Dec. 14.
    • America's Game is slated for 3 p.m. and Army will be looking for its fourth consecutive win over its archrival.
    • The contest will air live on CBS with Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and Jamie Erdahl on the call.
    • The game can also be heard on the Army Sports Network through the TuneIn app or goarmywestpoint.com, and Westwood One national radio will carry the game as well.

    • Since the start of the 2016 season, Army is averaging a nation's best 331.8 yards per game on the ground.
    • Army West Point is averaging 311.7 rushing yards per game (2nd nationally) in 2019 and has 3,740 net rushing yards total (2nd).
    • The Blacks Knights own the best third down conversion rate dating back to the 2010 season, converting 809-of-1,697 third downs (47.7 percent).
    • The Black Knights' 44 rushing scores are tied for second in the nation, while their 5.4 yards per rush is 13th.
    • Army's had 19 rushes go for 30 or more yards this season, good for a tie for fifth in the nation. It is 10th in 10-plus yard rushes (92), tied for 10th in 40-plus rushes (9), and is 13th in 20-plus (27).
    • The Black Knights have three plays this year that have gone for 80 yards or more (all touchdowns), which is tied for the nation's lead.

Commander-In-Chief's Trophy on the Line in Annual Army-Navy Game
    Setting the Stage
    • Army and No. 21 Navy will meet in the greatest rivalry in all of sports on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field (69,176) in Philadelphia for the 120th playing of America's Game, the Army-Navy Game presented by USAA. CBS Sports will televise the game nationally with Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and Jamie Erdahl on the call, while Westwood One will have the national radio call with John Sadak, Ross Tucker and Amber Theoharris.
    • Navy last entered the Army-Navy game ranked in the top 25 in 2015 when the No. 21 Midshipmen defeated Army, 21-17.
    • If Navy can finish the year in the Associated Press Top 25, it would be just the third time in the last 56 years that Navy has finished the year in the AP Top 25 (18th in 2015, 24th in 2004). Navy did finish 17th in the now defunct UPI poll in 1978, but was unranked in the Associated Press Poll (was only top 20 back then).
    • This year marks the fourth time in the last five years that Navy has cracked the top 25 (2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), which also coincides with Navy joining the American Athletic Conference. Navy has been ranked for a total of 16 weeks over the last five years, prior to that Navy was ranked for ONE week (at the end of the 2004 season) the previous 35 years.
    • Navy leads the all-time series against Army, 60-52-7 (.534), including a 44-40-4 (.523) mark in Philadelphia and a 10-2 (.833) record at Lincoln Financial Field.
    • If Navy defeats Army, the Mids would win the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy for the 16th time in school history and for the 11th time in the last 17 years.
    • If Army defeats Navy, then Navy, Air Force and Army will share in the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy since the three teams would all be 1-1 against each other (Navy beat Air Force and Air Force beat Army) and the trophy would remain at West Point in this scenario because the rules state the previous winner retains the trophy if all three teams go 1-1 against each other. In the previous 47 years the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy has been on the line, only four times has there been a tie (1974 retained by Navy, 1976 retained by Navy, 1980 retained by Navy and 1993 retained by Air Force).
    • The Mids are 26-8 over the last 34 games against Service Academy rivals Army and Air Force.
    • Navy is 9-2 for the first time since 2016 when the Mids started 9-2 and won the AAC West before injuries hit and Navy lost its final three games to finish 9-5.
    • Navy is guaranteed two more games this season - Army and vs. Kansas State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl (Dec. /31). If the Mids can win both games, they would tie the school record for wins in a season with 11 (2015).
    • Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo is in his 12th year at Navy, making him the longest-tenured coach in school history. With 96 career wins, he is the winningest coach in program history.
    • Niumatalolo's eight wins against Army are tied for the most in Army-Navy history alongside College Football Hall of Fame Coach Earl Blaik of Army, who was just 8-8-2 (.500) from 1941-58. A victory against Army would make Niumatalolo the winningest coach in the history of the Army-Navy Game.
    • Senior quarterback Malcolm Perry has rushed for 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns, making him only the second player (Keenan Reynolds) in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season three times. Perry is just 87 yards behind Napoleon McCallum for first on Navy's all-time single-season rushing list and 68 yards behind Will Worth for the single-season total offense record.
    • ESPN College Game Day will broadcast live from Philadelphia from 9:00 am-12 noon right outside of XFinity Live, which is across the street from Lincoln Financial Field. Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, former Navy assistant coach Lee Corso and Maria Taylor will be on hand.
    • CBS Sports Network will air Inside College Football: Army-Navy March-On presented by USAA from 12-noon to 1:30 pm and Inside College Football: Army-Navy Tailgate presented by USAA from 1:30-2:30 pm with host Brent Stover and analysts Randy Cross, Houston Nutt and Kevin Carter live from Lincoln Financial Field
    • CBS Sports will air its studio show, College Football Today, at 2:30 pm with Adam Zucker, Brian Jones and Rick Neuheisel live inside Lincoln Financial Field.
    • The Navy Football Insider Special with Pete Medhurst, Joe Miller, Keith Mills and Scott Wykoff will get underway at 12:00 pm on WBAL Radio 1090 AM.
    • The Navy Football Tailgate Show on WNAV Radio 1430 AM / 99.9 FM will air from 1:00-2:00 pm with Wylie Baker and Bill Lusby serving as the hosts.
    • The Navy Football Pregame Show with Pete Medhurst, Joe Miller, Keith Mills and Scott Wykoff will get underway at 2:00 pm on the Navy Radio Network followed by game action at 3:00 pm.
    • Following the contest, Medhurst, Miller, Mills and Wykoff will recap the day's events in a 30-minute postgame show.

If you don't think this is amazingly cool, I have no use for you. Navy players wearing Army unit patches.

My oldest, at age 16, carried a 1st Ranger Bn patch through his Philmont trek in 2004 in honor of a fallen comrade.

    These things are meaningful.
