I’d argue with in several points .Many in this board have point to the myriad of drugs we pump into our kids and think it’s ok. Many have pointed to the fact that no one in health care or school systems have warned or worried about many of these people. One or two might shrug it off and lay it at the feet of Christianity but if you want to paint the whole right side of the board with that broad brush be my guest. Just don’t complain when it happens to the left .
Most admit there isn’t a good solution but will not ignore the FACT that mental
Illness plays a massive role in these people’s decision to commit mass murder. And many times on this board there have been posters who attack any mention of a mass murderer being mentally ill because it takes the focus away from the scary black gun used to commit the murder .
Again… I think we should wait to hear all the evidence. I think we should consider the mental illness/ mental state of these monsters and I think we should be discussing every aspect of possible solutions
But we both know that many in the left have shit down discussion of mental illness when the shooter was right wing nut job. We both know that many on the left have piled on to this thread a the moments after the attacks and condemn right wing ideology immediately. And now we have the same side calling for a cool and measured response? Thoughtful discussion? Will we get to see this guys manifesto? Or will it be swept away like the Nashville shooter?

Nah he is just the guy who will get pardoned for doing “the right” thing…and then he will emerge as the leading GOP front runner in 2028.

My memory of the discussion on drugs is that it was one of those "just asking question discussions." Essentially, no real knowledge. Regardless, if the concern is the medications, then you have to control for the selection bias and reverse causal nature of any relationship here.

And here is the issue. So it is the drugs. No it is mental illness. So should we be declaring people mentally ill, likely prescribing them mental health medications or not?

It is generally a deflection from the fact that people that you will declare over-medicated or mentally ill can easily get a gun because certain people hate anything inconvenient in their purchasing of scary black guns.

Discussion works off of the notion that there is a discussion deeper than saying the words "mental health" over and over again. That has certainly not been my experience. I have heard very little discussion of the proper treatment of any specific mental illness. The level of discussion seems to be "person did something bad- mental health!" We don't even generally talk about specific diagnoses. People don't generally go over any specific problems with the treatment of those with PTSD or depression or bipolar or schizophrenia or borderline personality or any other specific diagnosis.

"Swept away" so well that you apparently know exactly what was in it to reference it. That seems like using a shooting to justify your resentment that people were mean to people you identify with more than anything else.

Hortman's murder gives Republicans control of the state House in Minnesota.

Hoffman's death would have ended the Democrat majority in the state Senate.

    Just the facts.

In all honesty the MAGA faithful just hunted down Vice President Pence in the House 4 years ago, put 152 cops in the hospital and we got to watch it on hundreds of videos. We all even agreed the next day everyone should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Not even days later it’s a family tour group or Antifa despite all the MAGA flags. Then this convicted felon pardons all the tourists who were convicted in a court of law by jurors.

So there is in fact a bunch of room for people and acts like this and unfortunately the guy at the top is the one who has created this vitriol and in fact encouraged people like this…he’ll he was making jokes about an 80 year old man getting his pounded with a hammer and all the MAGA jumped on board. It’s just the type of man he is and has always been…and it’s sad for a country which deserves so much better.

    Right here
I would start by suggesting that any partisan is likely to more clearly see the sins of the opposition.

I for one am not interested in this military parade, since June 14 just never was a date in my culture, and it being Trump’s idea on his own birthday is suspicious. But I will be very keen to celebrate July 4th next year. Our nation is full of warts, but few civilizations match our achievements, going back to a couple of my heroes, Madison and Washington. This tradition deserves celebration.

Adams was an interesting case, because he too played a key role in the founding, but then as president, he flouted the key foundations of our new tradition with the alien and sedition acts. These acts made illegal criticism of the highest offices of the federal government, except for the vice president. Why? Because this office was occupied by his chief rival, Thomas Jefferson. Such an authoritarian and arbitrary kind of law is as unAmerican as it gets. Similar postures have been taken by the current administration. Eg Harvard is a private college being punished by the federal government for operating like 98% of all US universities. The administration is floating punishing the state of California basically for supporting liberal policies. Like the alien and sedition acts, these moves I can’t condone.

In federalist 50, Madison noted that “When men exercise their reason coolly and freely on a variety of distinct questions they inevitably fall into different opinions on some of them.” In other words, unanimity is a sign of passion defeating reason or coercion. Eliminating competing viewpoints should never be the goal.

"was" in the past tense. He could very well be a former lib who flipped. Keep in mind that in addition to his list of state legislators as targets he also had flyers on the "No Kings" demonstrations. What we don't know, we don't know although keep in mind it's not the libs who have advocated "Second Amendment remedies".

I’m not sure it’s “many” think is “OK” but as one who has used prescribed meds for kids, they are used in conjunction with behaviors like attempted suicide and managing a level of violence that gets them arrested. Nobody sets out to pump kids full of drugs. All parents start out with an aversion to it. But some parents get past the aversion when the alternatives are worse. But given the society we live in, in some cases there aren’t a lot of other good choices.

If we didn’t have social media, really awful website, and we didn’t have violent games, and we didn’t have violent media, and we didn’t have access to guns, perhaps these issues would be somewhat less. But they aren’t going away any time soon.

Can we give this crap a rest for a few days and just mourn the deaths of public officials who were tragically killed?

While given the target was democratic lawmakers I would have assumed the shooter would be right wing, but with the mixed evidence at this point there isn’t a lot of point in speculating. Those asserting he was motivated one way or other aren’t going to change the truth, whatever it turns out to be.

It’s also the case that often these people don’t fit neatly into any ideological box, which isn’t shocking because in order to commit a crime like this you’ve clearly broken with reality. Expecting somebody who is whacked out to have a coherent political ideology is optimistic.

I'd like to get on record as hoping that he dies for his cause, whatever it is, before making us go to the trouble of having to try him. Sorry if that makes me a bad person.

Doesn't look like it's going to work out for you. You're about as close on this prediction as you were on your hyperinflation predictions of a few years ago. Dude was an anti-abortion wacko who voted for Trump.
