Voting machine company Dominion Voting Systems has settled its defamation lawsuit against conservative media outlet Newsmax for $67 million, according to an SEC filing from the outlet.

The settlement, which came on Friday, marks the latest settlement paid to a voting machine company by conservative news outlets over falsehoods they pushed alleging fraud in the 2020 election, in which former President Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump.

The settlement is set to be paid out in three installments, per the filing, with $27 million to be paid on Aug. 15, $20 million to be paid on or before Jan. 15, 2026, and $20 million to be paid or before Jan. 15, 2027.

Let's be honest. No one actually believes that the 2020 election was stolen now and no one believed it then. It's a shame that these right wing news stations are going to end up paying close to $1 billion to perpetuate a line that they knew wasn't true. did they do it just to satisfy cult members?

Yeah... so the machines do NOT reprogram themselves, but they are made to help facilitate cheating? Therefore... defamation?

Trump has been settling for chump-change. I think he needs to up his defamation game.

He has upped his defamation game against the Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch with a $10 billion lawsuit and the chances are that Trump will drop it to avoid being deposed. Unlike ABC and CBS/Paramount Rupert and the WSJ will not be intimidated into settling a frivolous lawsuit.

That settlement along with the $787 million settlement agreed to by Fox News demonstrates which media outlets actually perpetuate "fake news". Note that neither CNN nor MSNBC have agreed to settle defamation lawsuits for sums even remotely close to the sums agreed to by those media outlets.

Edit: There were also these other defamation lawsuits settled by right-wing media outlets over the false narrative that voting machine companies were complicit in widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

Bill, why did all of these right wing networks lie about the election being stolen?

Lots of people believe it was stolen, no matter how much documentary evidence (including from Trump’s internal White House memos) establishes the claims were just made up. Heck, Putin—completely understanding how Trump works—placated him in Alaska by telling him the mail-in votes cost him the election in 2020, leading Trump to go off a Twitter-tantrum screaming about the the “rigged election.”

but do you think the machines could be hacked? Not were they, but is it possible then and now?

Speaking only for myself, while it's possible that the machines could be hacked, if the networks (Newsmax, Fox News and OAN) had substantive evidence that the machines were hacked they would not have entered into settlements with the voting machine companies. They did so because they were caught misrepresenting baseless allegations as actual facts.

It's possible for the machines to be hacked, but the machines aren't connected to any outside network while voting is happening. That means, each specific machine would have to be hacked for there to be significant fraud. This 2022 review done by CISA shows where the government found potential vulnerabilities in Dominion voting systems. The biggest issues were protecting the information and potential forgery fraud. Nothing widespread, and nothing that Newsmax could or did use as defense for the lawsuit.

And repeating those lies over and over and over and over, ultimately enabling January 6, and fostering dangerous distrust in our democratic institutions.

Do you really think that Shari Redstone would have admitted that CBS settled because they were afraid that Trump would use the FCC and/or the Anti-Trust Division of the DOJ to block the pending CBS/Paramount merger with Skydance, the real reason for the settlement.
Merger of Skydance Media and Paramount Global - Wikipedia
On July 7, 2024, American media companies Skydance Media and Paramount Global announced a definitive agreement to merge in a deal valued at $8 billion, forming a new entity known as "Paramount Skydance Corporation". The agreement values the newly formed entity at approximately $28 billion.

It's weird how Trump supporters tune in to, and actually even tolerate, such known and proven liars.

But it's a free country, so they are entitled to do so. I guess it, like most things any person does, it would be accurate to say that it reflects their values.

So it's possible the voting machines could be hacked. Why then use voting machines? We don't need them.

Because they are faster and more accurate than hand counting. And there are just as easy, if not easier ways to "hack" a hand count, including a dishonest agent counting ballots, sneaking in paper ballots that are already filled out, or claiming ballots to be unreadable. With the machines, hacks are easier to find and fix, and again, the count is more accurate and much faster.
